Lack of equity is an issue that since the beginning of the 20th century has generated debates and
violence in the world. In the United States, as in many other nations, inequality is expressed in a
grouping that throws out different populations with their own customs, these are known as social
classes (Social classes are defined as a stratification in which a group of individuals share A
characteristic, in this case the aspect that define characteristic of social classes is the economic
power of people). In Colombia, social inequality is a frequent issue of its citizens, it is spoken of
Social inequality is not only an issue that concerns third world countries, it is also a problem that
touches nations defined as world powers. The United States has been classified on many
occasions as the most powerful nation in the world, principally by its economic influence. Even
so, the United States remains a country with a high level of inequality. Comparing with a state
like Colombia (that is cataloged as a nation in process of development and with a high poverty
rate), in terms of inequity, the United States surpasses Colombia due to it has the following
statistics:
By 2016 In the United States it was reported that more than 85% of GDP corresponded to that
By 2016 in Colombia it was reported that just over 20% of GDP corresponded to those
These data show that most of the economic wealth of these two nations is concentrated just in
1% of the population. So, it is inferred that they are countries where inequality is an important
element. Inequity is not only expressed in economic terms, also it is present through the
existence of social classes, where each group has its own identity and culture within society,
throwing huge differences between visible classes elements of life every day, such as:
However, the economy of the two nations is very different. While the American GDP in 2016
was 18561 billion dollars, the Colombian one was 381.8 billion dollars. The two GDP describe
differences between the economies of the 2 countries. At same time, their social conditions are
different in many compliments, the most relevant for this case is: "education" in which The
United States far surpasses Colombia, the first being a developed country that invested 582.356
million euros while Colombia for that same year invested 10,750.9 million euros. The great
difference in educational expenditure explains why Colombia and the United States differ
economically from one another, since educational difference brings out the dissimilarities
between development and underdevelopment of nations. Another great difference between these
two worlds is the level of quality for life, which for The United States is much greater than for
Colombia. So, that although the same distinctions of social classes in the two countries have
been made, they differ in the conditions in which Subsist. An example of this phenomenon is the
indicator of extreme poverty (which suggests the income required for a person to be considered
poor in the two social contexts), for Colombia the indicator suggested that a household with less
than US $ 138.87 per month Is considered extremely poor, while for the United States it is
indicated that a home is in extreme poverty if his or her Home receives less than $ 2,000 per
month.
In conclusion, The United States and Colombia are totally different countries in a great variety of
aspects (as in their economic and industrial development). However, they share the stigma of
social classification, giving very similar statistics to inequality, and distributing their social
classification in the same way, for the former although the United States is a developed country
and Colombia is a developing country. Two share the same social classification with the only
difference that each of the social classes differ in their conditions in terms of quality of life.
