Assignment: Institutional Assessment & Change: Reflections and Exemplary Work

Law enforcement agencies depend on the successful utilization of statistical information

that will be the foundation for effective policing. A basis for such a foundation relies
on the practice of Intelligence LED Policing. This program teaches the effective use, of
collected information which law enforcement agencies can use to effectively deal with
minor and complex community relation issues. As the technology continues to
improve, students who graduate from this program can use this type of data collection to
effectively use the data to create strategies to combat crime. This theme connects to my
profession in law enforcement because it gives the user the ability to use data to make
the type of change in a community that will bring a positive outcome.

To effectively monitor categories of crime, students have obtained the ability to use
data collection from sources such as the National Incident Based Reporting System or
NIBRS. The data presented in NIBRS is attained from local, state, and federal automated
records systems. NIBRS is comprised of data that records single incidents of crime and
arrest within 22 offense categories made up of 46 specific crimes. The use of the NIBRS
system, which is also referred to as the new Uniform Crime Report system, is a theme
that connects to my profession in law enforcement because it represent an unrepresented
segment of the population to more accurately use statistics to identify crime patterns and
trends.

Students of this program also learned how to use The Uniform Crime Reporting system,
which is an annual publication in which the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The system
compiles the volume and rate of violent and property crime offenses for the nation and
by the state. Law enforcement agencies throughout the nation contribute and provide crime
statistical data which is analyzed and published every 12 months. This theme is connected
to my profession because the data displays the results of statistical data that can be used
to measure the effectiveness of a law enforcement agency and what patterns or trends need
to be looked at much closer.
