NOTES
traditional worship
Early followers of Jesus continued to celebrate the
Resurrection on the first day of every week. In fact,
it was eight days after the Resurrection (Sunday)
that the disciples were together again in an upper
room and this time, Thomas was with them. They
were remembering and undoubtedly reliving Jesus
resurrection. Certainly, they were talking about it
again trying to convince Thomas they had actually
seen the risen Lord when Jesus appeared again in their
midst! Thomas was convinced! These first Christians
continued to meet and worship on Sundays as well as
attend synagogue on Friday evenings and observe the
Sabbath on Saturdays. Gradually the pressure became
greater between those who believed and those who
still felt it necessary to observe the Sabbath. In the
second and third centuries, Easter was celebrated
a full fifty days culminating in Pentecost. The feast
of First Fruits lasted the seven weeks. Jesus rose
from the dead on the first day of the Jewish Feast of
First Fruits. Paul refers to Jesus as the firstfruits of
those who have fallen asleep (died) The joy of Jesus
victory over death was not a one day celebration! The
rejoicing continued right up to Pentecost following
Jesus ascension to heaven and the sending of the Holy
Spirit. During the next six Sundays well continue to
celebrate the Resurrection. - Dr. Dan Sharp
