Unit Title: Atoms and Molecules Name: Destinee Nunez

Content Area: Chemistry Grade Level: 10/11th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
HS-PS1-1. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the
outermost energy level of atoms.
HS-PS1-2. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron
states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.
HS-PS1-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer
the strength of electrical forces between particles.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
Students will be able to understand the core parts of an atom, students will know the difference between an
element and compound, students will be able to differentiate between elements of atoms based on their
atomic composition, to draw structure diagrams of molecules and compounds, and to identify ionic or
covalent compounds.

Key terms: atom, nucleus, neutron, electron, proton, atomic number, mass number, ionic bonds, and
covalent bonds

21st century learning skills:

Make Judgments and Decisions:
Effectively analyze and evaluate evidence, arguments, claims and beliefs.
Reasons Effectively:
Use various types of reasoning as appropriate to explain how they concluded their decision
Use Systems Thinking:
Analyze how parts of a whole interact with each other to produce overall outcomes in a complex system.
Collaborate:
Demonstrate the ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse teams
Unit Summary:
Chemistry is the study of matter. Matter, the physical substance that makes up the universe, is composed of different combinations
of atoms and molecules. In this unit, students will learn about the composition, properties, and reactivity of the atoms and molecules
that create matter. Students will get to explore different properties and compositions of atoms and molecules in web based activities
and a group research presentation. As a class, we will explore types of molecules, properties of atomic structure, what reactions these
molecules are present in, and why these molecules are important to our everyday life. At the end of this unit students will be able to
identify covalent and ionic bonds, draw molecule structures, make calculations based off of atomic mass, and have basic knowledge of
scientific research that helped develop what us scientist know today.
