DISCUSSION

Firstly, the Boys calorimeter were heated with NGL gas that been provided with valve from tank
to Boys calorimeter opened at 4. The calorimeter was heated until it reached constant
temperature that being observed using mercury thermometer. The different between inlet
temperature and outlet temperature were observed to have 18 oC . During this time, the inlet
temperature is 25.4 oC while the outlet temperature is 42.6 oC . The experiment begins and all
data collected. Water supply that drained out of the cylinder were collected using beaker and
measured. When there were no running experiment, the water were being transfer to waste lines.
From our observation for three repeated experiment, water collected increase with increasing
temperature. The average water collected is 2697.5 ml. This related to heat being supply and the
vapor produced. Once the water supply into the Boys calorimeter, burner will heat the water and
vapor created. The water supply collected was the water used during the experiment where the
experiment start at 0 point at gas meter and ends after it completed one round circulation. The
average time to finish one complete circulation is 4.20 minutes. To calculate the calorific value,
formula in calculation part were used. The gas volume factor is extrapolation from the table. For
this experiment, the calorific value calculated is. The higher the temperature supply the higher
the calorific value.

CONCLUSION

For conclusion, Boys calorimeter is one of the experiment to find the calorific value in other
words the energy supply by substances to burn it in one time. The higher the temperature of
substances burn at burner, the higher the temperature outlet hence the calorific value increases.
RECOMMEMDATION

1. Light the flint gun on the side of the burner so that the flame reaches around the gas. Wear the
glasses for safety.

2. When taking the temperature reading, eyes should be level with the top of the mercury in the
thermometer to read it accurately. The reading is not the same when look down or up onto the
degree lines on the thermometer. Handling the thermometer can affect the reading when touch it,
as heat can transfer from hands (warmer to cooler).

3. Make sure that there are no air locks in the tube.

4. Be careful with the water at outlet, do no touch with bare hands.

5. Adjust the gas valve if the gas supply is too small.

6. Any adjustments to the apparatus should be taken 30 minutes earlier before start the
experiment. It is because to ensure that the apparatus stabilize enough.

7. All valves should be closed after the experiment is done.
