EDPS 235 Lesson Plan Assignment

50 points
Spring 2017

Lesson Plan Title What is this lesson called?

Grade Level and setting 5 points My lesson is in a fifth grade classroom that is
created of about 23 students. The desks are
grouped into pairs facing each other so that
the students can collaborate on certain school
material. It fits the stereotype of a typical
classroom that you would think of when you
think about a fifth grade class. The lesson that
I am teaching is a math lesson about adding
and subtracting fractions with unlike
denominators. The students have some
knowledge about what you are supposed to
do, but still need help with the steps.

Procedure 5 points My objective for this lesson is that after the

students are given their worksheet that I
provide, they will be able to get at least an
8/12 on their first try. I will begin the lesson by
explaining to the students what they are going
to learn in the time I am there. I will teach the
lesson by using visuals to show them the
fractions that they are adding and subtracting,
and asking them how they can add to the
drawings to make them the same. The overall
steps that I expect to take after this point in
time are as follows:
- I will show the students a problem, one
addition and one subtraction, using the
new technique with drawing out the
fractions.
- I will ask if any of the students have
questions about the steps and if they
dont I will move on.
- After we work through both problems, I
will tell the students to work on number
2-4 on both sides of the worksheet that
I have given them.
- I will give them around 20 minutes to
complete those problems.
- After the 20 minutes are up, I will ask
the students if they need more time or
if we can start going over the problems
together.
- If they do not need more time, I will tell
the students that I am going to pick on
them at random for them to come up
and complete one of the problems that
they chose.
- Once they are done with their
problems, we will go over them and
make sure no one has a question about
the answers that were given.
- After this, I will have the students work
on one more problem from each side of
the worksheet. However, I will ask them
to only complete one step at a time on
the board. (Each student will write one
step until the problem is complete)
- After they have walked through this I
will give them the rest of the time to
complete their worksheets and then I
will collect them. After I collect the
worksheets, I will thank them for letting
me work with them.
- This overall lesson should take about
45-50 minutes.

Value 5 points I am teaching this lesson because when I was

taught this lesson in school I felt that I didnt
really know why we took the steps we did to
get the answer. With the way that I am
teaching this lesson, it allows me to provide
my students with a visual way to view the
fractions to understand how we get the final
answer. I think that it is very important for my
students to know how to do this lesson
because it is a basic skill that you need to
know for any future math class after this
grade.

Assessment 5 points I plan on giving the students a worksheet that

has a front and back side to it. On one side it
will have adding fractions, and on the other
side it will have subtracting fractions. They will
be asked to do this for their homework, but
their score on this homework assignment will
determine whether or not they understood the
lesson. During the class when I am teaching
the lesson, I will check for understanding by
asking the students to raise their hand if they
have any questions. I will also ask them
frequent questions about whether or not they
know which step I need to take next in order
to solve the problem.

Differentiation/Tiered Lesson 5 points For my lesson, I will allow the students to work
in groups based off of their understanding of
the material. This will allow them to work
together on things that they understand, and
will also help me to know which group of
students that I need to focus my help on
more. Having the students in groups will help
them to know what they need to practice on,
and working with other students could also
help them get a different perspective on how
to do the work. One student may understand
the content to a different extent and be able
to explain it better to one of his classmates in
a way that I couldnt explain it to them. Group
work would overall help the students in
getting multiple perspectives and would allow
me to know which groups need more of my
attention throughout the lesson.

MUSIC See Textbook beginning on page 219 for this

information.
Remember, for the MUSIC aspects, write about
how you will do these things within the lesson
you will teach. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO
EVERY ONE OF THE MUSIC ITEMS LISTED
BELOW. But you should be able to talk about
at least 2 for each.
eMpower your students 5 points I will give my students a sense of control in
my lesson by allowing them to do one of the
problems that they got to do on their
worksheet in class on the board. I will also
allow them to pick the people that they work
with while doing the first three problems on
each side of the worksheet just so they feel
that they have freedom to choose how they
go about working on the worksheet. I will
support the students autonomy by allowing
them to explore the different ways other
students are doing the work in their groups
that theyd be assigned to later in the lesson.
Also, I would allow them to work through their
problems that they have on their own until
they have tried everything and would need
my help. I feel that allowing them to work
through their own problems would help them
to realize that they can get through their
problems when they are open to asking others
how they did the problem. I will keep my
student motivated by telling them that I will
continue to pick at random for students to
come to the board and do steps of the
problem, so that they know they need to stay
engaged and make sure that they understand
the lesson as we continue throughout it. I will
ask my students to set personal goals
because I believe that it is always good to self-
assess before you go into an activity so that
you can see your own improvement
throughout the lesson. It allows you to see
how much you have learned compared to
where you started out in the lesson.
Demonstrate Usefulness of the activity 5 I will relate this lesson to the students goals
points by telling them how important it is to learn
this for future math lesson that they will learn.
I will tell them that this skill is used in almost
every math class, and that it is important to
know because skills like this will be needed for
them to do well on their ISTEP, SATS, and any
other big tests that they need to take in order
to move on to the higher-level learning. This
lesson is important to students due to all of
the things that I have listed above about it
being an important skill for them to have to be
successful in their future learning.
Foster Success 5 points Throughout the lesson I will make sure that
when the students are doing their work
correctly I will acknowledge that they are
doing it correctly. For the students that may
need a little extra practice, I will be sure to let
them know how proud I am for them trying so
hard while working and that I love how much
effort that they are putting into asking other
about how they are doing their work. I will
focus the students attention on mastery goals
more by the repetitiveness that I put into my
lessons. Having them continually repeating
the steps of the problems will allow them to
master the steps of how to do the problem
and understand it than just being able to
perform the procedures.
Stimulate Interest 5 points My lesson will be interesting to my students
because I have designed my lesson so that at
one point in time it is almost like the students
are the teachers for their class. I do this so
that they can each write a step on the board
that is used to solve the problem, but I also do
it this way so that the students are learning
the material that they are teaching to the
others. I could make the material more
interesting by using word problems that relate
to things that the students like. I could ask
them to give me a few things that they are
interested in that can be used in a fraction
form and then make up problems that can go
along with them using the fraction techniques
Show and promote Caring 5 points I will show my students that I like them and
care for them by making sure that I give each
student the same amount of attention and to
make sure that each student knows that they
can trust me if they ever need to tell me
something. I will also explain to my students
how important it is to me that they get the
best education experience that they need in
order to succeed. I will interact with the
students during the lesson by asking them
one on one questions, walking around to
check work, and even just making sure that
they are staying on task. My lesson will allow
the students to demonstrate care for
themselves and others because I will allow
them to help each other when someone has a
problem with understanding a problem.
Working together on these things allows their
peers to see that they care about whether or
not they are understanding the material, and
it will also show the individual that they have
care for themselves because they are making
sure that they are succeeding and meeting
their individual goals.
