PART - I
(Notations and symbols have their usual meanings)
Answer any five questions :
1. a) Suppose, V be the set of all real m 5 n matrices. Check, whether V is a vector
space with respect to usual matrix addition and scalar multiplication.
b) Define direct sum of two vector subspaces U and W of a vector space V. Then
prove that, it is the smallest subspace of V containing U and W. 6+4
2. a) Find a basis and dimension of the subspace W of R3, where

W x, y, z R 3 , such that x y z 0 4

b) If U L 1, 2,1 , 2,1,3 and W L 1,0,0 , 0,1,0 . Show that U and W are

subspaces of 3. Also determine dim U, dim W and dim U W . Hence
deduce that dim U W 3. 6

3. a) Suppose, a mapping T : 3 2 is defined by

T x, y, z x z, y z , x, y, z 3.

Prove that T is linear. Find also ker T and nullity of T. 5

b) The matrix of a linear mapping T : 3 2 relative to the ordered bases

6. a) Let V be an inner product space and Sw1 , w 2 , ...., w n be a linearly

independent subset of V. We define S 1 , 2 , ... , n , where v1 = w1 and

Then, show that, S is an orthogonal set of non zero vectors. 5

b) In 4 , let w1 = (1, 0, 1, 0), w2 = (1, 1, 1, 1), and w3 = (0, 1, 2, 1). Using Gram-
