Hannah Hazelbach Philosophy of Education

Sempre ncipit
Always begin

This Latin phrase is the first thing my professor in Italy taught me

while I was studying abroad. Each moment of your life should begin
with the spirit of a new beginning. No matter who you are, where you
come from, or what you may or may not have done, each moment is
a new moment and each day is a new day. My hope is for my
students to walk into our classroom and be welcomed with the same
spirit everyday. Each day is a fresh start, and new day to be inspired
and make a difference.

There is so much more to learn from literature and history than we

realize. While attending Aquinas College I was given the opportunity
to study abroad in Rome, Italy for three months. Living in the capital
of the former Roman Empire allowed me to access historical
landmarks such as the Roman Colosseum, Saint Peters Basilica,
Castel SantAngelo, the Arch of Constantine, and many more. I was
also given the opportunity to study the works of Robert Frost, Richard
Wilbur, and Dante and their influence on American culture and
Pietas. Over fall break I was given the opportunity to visit Warsaw
and Krakow Poland and witnessed the sights of the Warsaw uprisings,
and Auschwitz Death Camp. These emotional experiences sparked
my interest for history, and I want to bring my students to these
places and events through my own experience. I have always loved
history, and I want to continue to travel to historic places and share
my passion for being there. My hope is for my students to feel
comfortable asking serious questions regarding historical injustices
and inspire their passions. I want encourage students to think
critically about diverse cultural, historical and literary perspectives,
and how each has shaped the world we live in today. Through the
legacies of historical places, people, and literature, students will
discover the importance of their student identity, and how they
themselves have an essential role to play in society. I want to
incorporate classroom learning of reading, writing, and virtual
resources to community service projects. I am inspired by the many
opportunities to give back to the community, and my hope is for my
students to recognize the freedoms, privileges, and opportunities
they have due to the courageous legacy of people in the past.
Therefore, I am passionate about helping students find what
they are passionate about, and connecting them to the
resources they need to achieve their goals and dreams and
make a difference in society.
