Course Policies

Problem set assignments are due as assigned on the Blackboard website. Homework
must be turned in at the beginning of the lecture or when you first arrive to class if you
are tardy. You are not permitted to work on your homework during the lecture. Late
homework will not be accepted unless unusual circumstances arise. If you have
extenuating circumstances please inform the instructor as soon as possible.
Students are permitted to work together in small groups on the homework assignments
but must not copy each others work.
Homework will be graded mainly on method and execution using a four point scale.
Solutions should include adequate explanatory comments to demonstrate your
understanding of the material. Use scratch paper to first work out the problems then
write them down on clean paper using NEAT freehand lettering. Do not turn in work
with messy erasures. A straight edge for drawing figures is highly recommended - strive
for a professional appearance in your work! The grading scale for each problem is as
follows:
3 pts - nearly correct solution, equivalent to an A
2 pts - good attempt made at solution, equivalent to a B
1 pts - mediocre attempt, equivalent to a C
0 pts - poor attempt or no attempt, equivalent to an F
It is likely that I wont grade every single homework problem but may grade only a
couple of problems from each set. But if there are any problems with no work on them, I
will mark down your grade even if its one of the problems I dont grade in the set.
Exams: One open-book mid-term exam and one final examination are planned. Usually I
allow you to develop and use a single page of reference notes that you can use during the
exams.

Grading Basis: Homework - 25%

Mid-term - 35%
Final exam - 40%
