CCSS-ELA RI.2 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how it is supported by key
details

Learning Objective/Goal:
Students will be able to use a graphic organizer to organize key details about the main idea or topic which
will be on Cesar Chavez. Students will learn about who Cesar Chavez is as well as all of the impacts and
changes that he has created in the past.

The Lesson Plan

Introduction (10 minutes)


Teacher will begin the lesson by activating students' prior knowledge through asking students if they are
familiar with who Cesar Chavez is. This will allow me to gauge where students' knowledge of Cesar
Chavez and address any misconceptions students may have with Cesar Chavez.

Teacher will complete the Know and Want to Know section of a KWL chart with class to gain knowledge
on the prior knowledge students know about Cesar Chavez and what questions they may have about
Cesar Chavez.

Body (45 minutes):

Modeling (10 minutes)


Begin the lesson by stating the purpose of the lesson which is students will learn about Cesar Chavez
through reading some informational texts and then using this information to create an informational essay
using the facts and details from the informational texts. After stating the purpose, present the academic
language and vocabulary for this lesson so students gain a familiar understanding of the vocabulary words
in order to comprehend the texts.

Guided Practice (20 minutes)


Next, after the whole class second read of the text, introduce the graphic organizer which students will
use to organize their details and facts from the reading. Then introduce the graphic organizer and then as a
class complete 1-2 facts and details for each section.

Students will complete the rest of the graphic organizer and complete a third read of the text with their
clock partner. Teacher will walk around, monitor students, observe students, scaffold and provide support
for students as they complete their third read and complete the graphic organizer.

Independent Practice (15 minutes)


Students will be working with their clock partner to complete the graphic organizer.

Closure (5 minutes)
Restate the objective of the lesson. Students will share with their table groups some things that they
learned about Cesar Chavez from this lesson. After, students will share out as a class some things that
they learned from this lesson. Class will return to the last section of the KWL chart and complete the
Learn section.
