Unit 5 Logistic Regression: Theory and

Logic
Objectives
To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

1. Understand the basic purpose of logistic regression and when it is proper to conduct this
kind of analysis.

2. Become familiar with basic equations of logistic regression.

3. Recognize the several methods of conducting a logistic regression and how to interpret
the results of the analysis.

4. Understand the output of an IBM SPSS analysis of logistic regression.

Learning Activities
u05s1 Studies

Reading

Complete the following:

In Applied Statistics, read:

o Chapter 21, Binary Logistic Regression.

Some of the material is quite mathematical, so do not worry if you cannot follow the math. On
the other hand, the terms and logic of logistic regression are important and we will be
investigating them this week.

Optional Statnotes

An in-depth discussion of logistic regression can be found at StatNotes: Topics in Multivariate

Analysis by Garson. Many of the terms and concepts might be better understood by reading this
material.

u05d1 Interpretation of Odds

Discuss the use of odds in logistic regression. Using some very simple numbers, make up a
simple numerical example and explain how odds and probabilities were calculated. How are
odds different from an odds ratio?

Response Guidelines

Respond to at least one other posting by evaluating the learners response. Do you agree or
disagree? Why? Do you consider this a good answer to the question? Why or why not?

u05d2 Types of Logistic Regression

John plans to do a logistic regression using the default (enter) method. His friend Barbara
suggests that he should do a sequential logistic regression instead, and his other friend, Linda,
tells John that a stepwise logistic regression is the way to go.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these three options. What criteria should John use
in order to decide which method is best for him?

Response Guidelines

Respond to at least one other posting by making a counter argument to the position taken. In
other words, if the poster supports Barbaras suggestion of a sequential logistic regression,
respond to the post by making a counter argument for either the default (enter) method or a
stepwise logistic regression. Be sure to respond to the specific points raised in the posting.
