min. Explain to children that we are going to read about how we can
measure the weather. Student Edition page
5 5 min. 3 A thermometer is used to measure how hot or how cold the 260-263
something is like. And the temperature is measured in degrees.
If the weather is hot the temperature goes up and if it is cold the
temperature drops. (meet planning teacher for class experiment)
4 A rain gauge is a tool that is used to measure water fall. Rain,
snow, ice, hail are all forms of water. So to measure water fail a
rain gauge is placed on the soil or on the ground. When it rains it
will fall into the gauge. From this we can measure how much did
it rain. .
5 On page 262-263 explain to children that predict means
probably. Scientists observe and track the weather over time.
They look for changes in the weather using special tools.
6 Scientists use weather tools like weather satellite, weather
station or weather balloon to check the weather. Example: The
weather satellite its located in space and keeps moving around
the earth taking pictures of clouds or storms that are going to
come.
7 In this way the scientists will know what weather is coming.
Draw children attention to the chart on page 262 and ask what
does this information show us? (days of the week and their
temperatures) then ask what will come next after Wednesday
and what do you think the temperature will be like? (Thursday
maybe 48 degrees). Complete the question on oage 263.
Differentiation:
Beginner: Why do scientists use weather tools to make
weather report?(so we can know what weather is coming)
Intermediate: Can you name some weather tools to
measure temperature and rainfall? (thermometer and rain
gauge)
Advance: what other tools do weather scientists use to
measure weather?(
Closure and wrap up: Student Work: Children
answering the differentiation in class.
