Fraction Lesson Plan

Objective:

The student will:

- display, explain, and justify m
athematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical
language in written or oral communication [1G]
- represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal denominators referring
to the same whole using objects and pictorial models and properties of operations [3H]

Focus/Anticipatory Set:

- We are going to start off today by looking at this Basketball problem.

- After handing out paper, read the problem out loud. Instruct students to get with a partner or
work with their table in solving the problem. Record their work in their math journal. Allow 3-4
minutes
- Come back together as a class and go by table and have them explain how they solved the
problem. Write the answers on the board as they explain them to show them that there are
multiple different ways to solve the problem.
- "Today we will learn two strategies to compare fractions that involve finding the common
denominator.

Relevancy:

- Can be used when comparing measurements or fractions in everyday life.

Teaching:

- Using the back side of the Basketball problem worksheet, as a whole class, explain/teach the
students how to find a common denominator by either multiplying the denominators or finding
the least common denominator. (see attached)
- After completing the notes, ask the students if there are any questions about what they have
learned. If so, reteach. If not, move on to the guided practice.
- Work problems 1-3 as a class.
- Then, have the students get out a dry erase marker. Write four pairs of fractions on the board.
(Use problems 4-7 in the workbook pg.351) The students are to write a comparison sentence of
the fractions using the strategies that we learned. The students will do their work on their desk
and call the teacher over to check their answer before moving on to the next problem.
- The student will then complete their daily grade worksheet independently in order to reinforce
their understanding.
Extensions/Modifications:

Extension:
- The same activity can be extended to include subtraction of fractions with unlike denminators.
- This lesson can also address writing fractions in lowest terms (simplifying).
Modification:
- Allow students to use the fraction strips in order to visualize and manipulate different fractions.
- Pull students into small groups to further clarify content.

Check for Understanding:

- Marker on the desk practice.

Questioning Strategies:

- Why would finding common denominators be important?

- How would this be important to know in everyday life?
- Why are equivalent fractions important?

Guided Practice:

- Worksheet

Closure:

Exit ticket:

- Give each student a sticky note.

- The student must assess their understanding. They will either draw ,, or on their sticky
note. If they write a or , on the back they will write what they feel they need more help
with.
- Each student must stick the sticky note on the locker doors before leaving the classroom.

Materials:

- Workbook
- Dry erase marker
- Pencil
