Objective:
Social Studies Standard 1 Objective 3 a. Identify ways people use the
physical environment (e.g. agriculture, recreation, energy, industry).

Fine Arts-Visual Art Standard 4: (Contextualizing): The student will


interpret and apply visual arts in relation to cultures, history, and all
learning.

Objective 3: Recognize the connection of visual arts to all learning.


a. Use a visual arts form as a help in expressing an idea in a non-art
subject; e.g., a science project, the writing of a poem, a social
studies project.
b. Create a tableau using body shapes invented in dance with
elements and principles learned in art.

Reading: Literature Standard 2: Recount stories, including fables,


folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central
message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key
details in the text.

Language Objectives:
Students will give an example of a way people use physical environment by
creating a tableau to be presented to the whole class.

ELL Considerations:
Preview the text; explain difficult vocabulary before we start reading.
As hard words come up in the text, explain them
Review what a tableau is & have student(s) give an example of a tableau
Use pictures to help students make the connection between natural resources and their
characteristics

Preparation: What materials will be needed?


Book One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Woman of the Gambia by
Miranda Paul
Space for students to create tableaus

Time Lesson:

2:00-2:20 Read One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Woman of the
Gambia by Miranda Paul
Students will sit on the rug
o Remind them to sit up and to pay attention as the story
is being read since they need to create a tableau
afterwards.
Discuss different ways physical environments can be used
2:20-2:50 Students will create tableaus expressing different ways people use
physical environments (i.e. agriculture, recreation, energy, industry).
Students will get into groups of 5
o Names will be drawn by using name sticks that way
students are getting to work with people they may not
normally work with and they are able to have a variety
of different ideas.
Students will have 15 min. to create their tableau
o Give time reminders so all students can get done so
they are able to share. (15 min., 10 min., 5 min. & 3
min.).
Teacher will be walking around answering questions and
making sure students are staying on task.
Students will have 10 minutes to present their tableau and for
the other groups to guess which physical environment is being
used
2:50-3:00 Closure:

Review what we talked about today

Informal, students will write or draw on a sticky note different ways


people use physical environments and then post it on the doorframe.
This is their exit ticket.

Assessment:
-Informal, by having the students write or draw on a sticky note and then posting it on the
doorframe will let me see what students understand and dont understand. This will tell
me if we need to have a deeper discussion about the use of physical environments.
