MoTeC Training Seminar

Initial Startup

References - Users manual

This tutorial assumes that you are continuing on from the basic ECU setup
tutorial or have already setup the ECU basic parameters.

1. From the MoTeC EMP software, highlight the View menu item and
press the Enter key. A submenu will appear. Highlight the Main menu
item and press the Enter key.

Startup Procedure ECU

The View screen shows the current sensor values, digital input pin status
and the output status of the auxiliary output pins.

2. Press the F3 function key and check to make sure there are no
diagnostic errors. If there are, you will need to check the wiring to the
sensors before you proceed.

3. Check that the sensor values are within reasonable limits.

For example:
Map sensor is between 100 and 102 kPa at sea level.
Air and Engine temperature reads a similar value compared to the
ambient air temperature.
Battery voltage is from 11 to 14 Volts.

4. Press the escape key twice to go back to the EMP Main menu screen
and highlight the Diagnostics menu item then press the Enter key.

3

EMP Diagnostics Screen

A submenu is displayed of all the diagnostic functions available in the

ECU.

5. Highlight the Injector Test menu item and press the enter key. A
warning message will appear telling you to disconnect the fuel pump. If
the fuel pump is working disconnect the power to it.
Press the enter key to continue the test.

Injector Test Screen

From this screen you can use the up and down arrow keys to test if the
injectors are functioning and if they follow the firing order of the engine.
You can also use the left and right arrow keys, page up and page down
keys to change the rpm and pulse width they are operated at.

Re connect the fuel pump if you have disabled it.

6. Press the escape key once, then highlight the Ignition Test menu
item and press the enter key.

5

Ignition Test Screen

From this screen you can use the up and down arrow keys to turn the
ignition system off and on. If you are using more than one coil, the word
ON will be replaced by the coil numbers. By using the left and right arrow
keys, and the page up and page down keys, you can change the rpm that
the coil is triggered at as well as the dwell time to the coil.

7. Press the escape key once, then highlight the Auxiliary Output 4 Test
menu item and press the enter key.

Auxiliary Test Screen

Some auxiliary outputs have two types of functions. One is a frequency

output and the other a switched output. The screen above represents a
switched output. An output setup for frequency use has a different test
screen.
Auxiliary output 4 is normally assigned as the fuel pump control function.
To test the fuel pump use the up and down arrow keys to turn the fuel
pump off and on.

While the fuel pump is on, the fuel system can be tested for leaks.

8. Press the escape key twice to get back to the EMP main menu.
9. Highlight the Adjust menu item and press the enter key.
10. Highlight the Use Current File menu item and press the enter key.
11. Highlight the Ignition menu item and press the enter key.
12. In the ignition submenu highlight the Crank Index Position menu
item and press the enter key.

Ignition Timing

Before you start the engine the ref and sync sensor operation need to be
checked.
13. Remove all the spark plugs from the engine, disconnect the fuel pump
and coil power. Crank the engine and make sure the RPM value has a
sensible value and not erratic. Also check that there are no Ref and Sync
diagnostic errors.

14. Connect power to the coil and insert the sparkplugs into the plug leads.
Connect a timing light to number one sparkplug lead. Crank the engine
and look at the ignition timing.
The ignition timing in the crank should match what the ECU displays in
Ignition Advance display. If it is not correct you can adjust the Crank
Index ( CrIP ) value to get it the timing the same.
Note: When in one tooth per TDC mode and the engine is under 500 rpm,
the timing is set via the ref tooth and sensor position.
Some dial back timing lights may not work correctly at low rpm.
15. Fit all the spark plugs into the engine connect the fuel pump power.
16. Press the escape key twice and highlight the Fuel menu item and
press the enter key.
17. Select Overall Trim and press enter.

Fuel Trim Screen

18. Start the engine. If it will not start add or subtract fuel by pressing the
page up or page down keys. Once the engine has started lock in the trim
value by pressing the enter key.

19. Once the engine runs, go back to the Crank Index Position screen
and recheck the ignition timing. Adjust the CrIP value so the advance on
the crank matches what the ECU displays in Ignition Advance display.
Lock in the new value by pressing the enter key.

20. Once again check for any diagnostic errors.

The engine is now ready to be tuned using a chassis dyno or an engine

dyno.
