Detailed Lesson Preparation Guide

Elementary Education
Name: Jaymee Sigafose and Autumn Fields

Title: Multi-Cultural Cinderella

Grade: 4th

Concept/Topic: Using textual evidence to describe the similarities and

differences in diverse Cinderella stories

Time Needed: 45 minutes

Note: A detailed lesson plan is specific enough for another

teacher to read and teach effectively. There should not be any
question regarding what to do or how to do it.

Backward Design Approach: Where are you going with your

students?
Identify Desired Results/Learning Outcome/Essential Question:
Students will read a diverse selection of Cinderella stories from
different countries around the world.
Students will analyze similarities and differences of the diverse
Cinderella variations to the Cinderella story that we are familiar with by
charting observations using a Venn-Diagram chart.
Students will examine how Cinderella stories reflect information on a
countrys unique culture.

Ensuring Lesson supports district and state goals

NCSCOS Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.1
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly
and when drawing inferences from the text.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.3
Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on
specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions).

Assessment Plan:

Completed Venn-Diagram chart will accurately show similarities and

differences between the diverse Cinderella stories
Information within the Venn-Diagram is pulled from the text and is
correct

Meeting the student where they are:

Prior Knowledge/Connections:
The use of a Venn-Diagram chart (know what details goes on the
outside circles-differences and what details go on the inside circle-
similarities).
Using textual evidence to reflect on similarities and differences of
stories
Some background knowledge of the United States Cinderella story

Lesson Introduction/Hook:
How will you focus, excite, engage, and/or elicit knowledge as you introduce this
lesson? Think of ways you can appeal to student interest and cause students to be
excited about what they will be learning about.
Discuss with students about what will be explored: Using textual
evidence to reflect on similarities and differences in Cinderella stories
compared to the story that we know and how this will develop their critical
consciousness about other countries cultures.
Present learning outcomes: Students will read a diverse selection of
Cinderella stories from different countries around the world. Students will
analyze similarities and differences of the diverse Cinderella variations by
charting observations using a Venn-Diagram chart. Students will examine
how Cinderella stories reflect information on a countrys unique culture.
Students will come to the carpet to watch a video showing the original
story of Cinderella- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkOdV7bu1tM
Heart of the Lesson/Learning Plans
Differentiation/Same-ation:
Students will be in mixed-ability groups
Lesson includes technology pieces including videos, digital map, online
books(if applicable)
Students will work in small groups as well as participate in small
group/whole group discussions
Lesson will be delivered in a variety of methods: technological pieces,
hard copies of books, recording conclusions on a hard copy paper
Lesson Development:
Provide a detailed description of how the lesson will progress. What will you do as
the teacher? This should be a detailed step by step account of how a
lesson unfolds from beginning to end.
Students will come to the carpet to watch a video showing the original
story of Cinderella- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkOdV7bu1tM (the
hook)
Once the video is over we will ask the students questions about what
they took away from the video, if there are any questions about the video we
will answer them at this time
We will then explain to them the point of this lesson (we will explain
the objective of the lesson)
Introduce the Venn-Diagram chart to activate prior knowledge, answer
any questions that may be presented.
Students will be working in collaborative groups of 4-5 with 6 total
groups.
We will be giving them all the same story of Cinderella, just different
cultures versions of the story.
Students will read another version of the Cinderella story from another
culture such as
The Egyptian Princess by Shirley Climo
Yeh-Shen by Ai-Ling Louie
(http://www.unc.edu/~rwilkers/resource-china.htm )
Rough Face Girl by Rafe Martin
(https://www.sps186.org/downloads/basic/571615/Rough%20Face
%20Girl.pdf )
Cinderella, An Islamic Tale by Fawzia Gilani
The Korean Cinderella by Shirley Climo
It is their job to compare their story to the video we had them watch.
They will use Venn-Diagrams for this.
After all groups have read their version and have completed their
Venn-Diagram, we will have them take turns sharing out what they found in
their story. They will also flag on the map where their story took place.
The Venn-Diagrams will be on large paper, we will hang up all Venn-
Diagrams at the end of the lesson so that students can look at the
similarities/differences found.

Specific Questioning:
Student questioning should be planned ahead of time. Think about your students
and their needs. Plan questions that will challenge all students.
What do you know about Cinderella?- whole group
What was a major take away from the video we watched about the
Cinderella story that we are familiar with? -turn and talk and allow students
to present ideas to whole groups
What are some examples of similarities and difference you noticed in
your diverse Cinderella story from the Cinderella story that we are familiar
with? -small group
Where on the map is the country your story is set in located?- small
group
Are you shocked or surprised by any of your findings from your book?
Explain. -whole group
Did you have any prior knowledge of the country your book is located
in? -small group

Concluding the Lesson/Closure/Debriefing:

How will you wrap things up and tie together the ideas presented? How will you
help students make meaning from their experiences?
Once all groups finish reading their version of the Cinderella story and
completed the Venn Diagram, students will return to their seats.
Each group will share out 3-4 similarities/differences between their two
stories
Students will then place a post-it note on the map of where their
books setting was located (the country the story was based in)-

Once all groups have shared, start a discussion by asking what stood
out to them the most about the differences in the cinderella stories.
Conclude lesson by stating that this lesson is connecting to students
cultural background and developing their critical consciousness by exploring
the different countries cultures by exploring the various Cinderella stories.

Teaching Behavior Focus:

The teaching behavior that we are focusing on for this lesson is building classroom
climate. I chose to focus on building classroom climate because I want my students
to feel comfortable providing response opportunities dealing with analyzing
similarities and difference of various stories as well as discussing unique features of
a countrys culture. Additionally, we plan to offer positive reinforcements such as
verbal acknowledgements and non-verbal acknowledgements. I believe this lesson
will provide great opportunity for building a positive classroom climate.

Follow-Up Activities/Parent Involvement

An extension opportunity would be having each group of students to
research the country their book was based in. Students should research the
typical food that is eaten in this country, traditional clothing (for men and
women), housing types, and ways of transportation.
Students will make a short presentation of the information that is
collected through their research.
