Subject Science (Simple Machines)

Grade Level 3rd Grade, Online and Blended

Learning Objective Force, Motion, and Energy
3.2: The student will investigate and understand simple
machines and their uses. Key concepts include
a) purpose and function of simple machines;
b) types of simple machines;
Content

c) compound machines; and

d) examples of simple and compound machines found in
the school, home, and work environments.
Online Activity Before beginning the simulations, the teacher will meet with the
class synchronously using Adobe Connect. In this lesson, the
teacher will introduce the lesson on simple machines. They will
teach the basics of simple machines and answer any questions
the students may have throughout. After the lesson, the teacher
will open a module that includes the link to the simulation and a
word document with a couple questions (5-6) for the students
to answer. To get full credit, the students must complete all
three parts of the simulation and fill out the questions in that
document and turn it in online by the due date assigned.
For example:
Lesson 1: Wedge and Lever
1. Students will click the link in their module to take them
to the simulation: http://aspire.cosmic-
ray.org/Labs/Machines/ and they will also download the
document the teacher provides them.
2. Once they have the page loaded, students will scroll all
the way down and click the lesson that says Wedge and
Lever
3. Students will read the first slide (Introduction) and click
next at the bottom of the page. They will complete the
simulation by adjusting the measurements on the
program and record their results in the word document.
4. There will be short analysis questions within the
document that the teacher will have asked that the
students need to answer.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the lesson is completed, and
once lesson 1 is complete, move on to lesson 2 by
Pedagogy

clicking next on the bottom of the page.

At the end of the modules duration, the students will submit
their work and the teacher will meet with the students on
Adobe Connect once again. They will have a discussion together
about their experiences with the simulation and answer any
questions that the students may have.
