Technical description
WI panels are suitable for configuring single or double busbar switchgear in
conjunction with indoor installation.
WI switchgear units are completely metal-enclosed. The busbar
compartment which accommodates fixed parts only is segregated gas-tight
from the flange-mounted switching unit. The switching unit comprises the
three-position switch with isolating and earthing functions and the vacuum
circuitbreaker; in case of double busbar systems, there are two three-
position switches with isolating and earthing functions and the vacuum
circuit-breaker.
The busbar compartment and the switching unit feature three-pole
enclosure. Single-pole enclosure is provided in the area of the toroidalcore
current transformers which are located in an easily accessible position
outside of the SF6 atmosphere. The compact design results in a very clear
Gas-insulated double busbar switchgear WIB switchgear arrangement with low space requirement; it has the advantage
Rated voltage up to 36 kV; rated peak withstand that a switching unit can be mounted or removed very quickly without the
current up to 100 kA; rated current up to 2500 A busbar requiring isolation from the power supply.
The panels are equipped with a low-voltage cabinet for the required
measuring and protection relays or the terminal strips. The high
performance of the instrument transformers installed means that not only
electronic but also conventional protection relays can be deployed.
Thanks to its design, this panel series permits straightforward extension of
an existing switchgear on both sides, and extension from single to double
busbar models.

WI EN 5
WI Product description (contd.)

Components of the switching unit

The circuit-breaker in question is a vacuum circuit-breaker. The switching
unit has been equipped, for its isolating and earthing functions, with a
three-position switch featuring the positions:
Disconnector ON (CLOSE)
Disconnector earthing switch OFF (TRIP)
Earthing switch ON (CLOSE)

Earthing
The metal-enclosed WI series switchgear is equipped with a separate
earthing line running along the length of the switchgear.

Wiring
Wiring is effected with flexible cables (HO7V-K) in the technically required
cross-sections.

Corrosion protection
If desired, the indoor panels WIA and WIB can be provided optionally with
enhanced corrosion protection. To ensure optimum switchgear protection,
the environmental installation conditions, such as wind-borne sand,
aggressive dust (to be defined as salt dust, coke dust, cement dust etc.),
vermin (termites), increased humidity levels, aggressive atmosphere (type
of chemicals and their concentration to be defined) must be specified.

Installation locations
The switchgear has been designed for installation in closed electrical
operating facilities.

Connection of cables and bars

The cables are connected by means of metal-enclosed connectors.
Switchgear units equipped with multiple connection tanks enable
connection of up to five 300 mm2 cables or two 1250 mm2 cables per
phase, depending on the insulation rating.
Alternatively, fully insulated busbar systems or SF6-insulated conductor
bars can be used.

Low voltage cabinet

The secondary devices for protection relay, control, measurement, billing
metering and other systems are installed in the low-voltage cabinet. The
low-voltage cabinet is separated systematically from the primary part, is
shock-proof and arc-resistant. It is an independent, closed low-voltage
compartment with mechanical and electrical interfaces to the vertical
section (screw-fastened plug-and-socket connector).
The clear separation between the rack and the low-voltage cabinet is a
particular advantage for the company operating the switchgear. Retrofitting
spare panels and conversion or replacement of complete low-voltage
cabinets (e.g. due to process changes) at a later date is also
straightforward. The panel remains completely enclosed even if the
low-voltage cabinet is not attached.
Optional inspection ports can be integrated in the torsion-resistant door of
the low-voltage cabinet, the door also being able to accommodate
measuring instruments, control elements and protection relays.

Current/voltage transformers
Current transformers
The current transformers are designed as toroidal-core transformers and
are put onto the cable outgoing feeder areas with single-pole enclosure.
The current transformers in line with the busbar consist of identical units.
There, they are slipped onto the busbar areas which also feature singlepole
enclosure. The capacity of the current transformers is designed in such a
way that supply of conventional protective devices is also possible.
Up to 3 transformers (3 cores) can be accommodated per phase and
outgoing feeder. The transformers can also be exchanged subsequently.
Three current transformers (3 cores) per phase can also be installed in line
with the busbar, in order to measure its currents.
A special current transformer arrangement is the bus coupler panel within
one panel width. In the double busbar top attachment tank, one core of
Current transformer in line max. 80 mm height with an ID of 135 mm and an OD of 195 mm can be
with the busbar installed for each phase. The low voltage is led out via a max. 7-pole line
which is SF6 proof.

WI Product description (contd.)

Voltage transformer
The conventional solution for the inductive voltage transformer is a
separate single-phase metalenclosed module which can be connected via
cable connectors almost anywhere in the busbar area and on the outgoing
feeder cable, and thus arranged in practically any location as required.
in the outgoing feeder area
Another design comprises metal-enclosed inductive voltage transformers
directly flangemounted to the outgoing feeder block, with the isolating /
earthing device mounted upstream. An externally operated isolating
feature prevents the voltage transformer from being endangered/ put at
risk during DC tests on the cable.

Voltage transformer on busbar

on the busbar
A separate metering panel with a set of inductive voltage transformers is
provided to this effect. Taking account of the high priority of the busbar, a
disconnector enables isolation of the transformer section. Both
disconnector and transformer are located in separate compartments.
Thus, any damage which might occur in the vicinity of the transformer
does not affect the isolating area or the busbar.

WI EN 15
WI Product description (contd.)

Interlocks
Actuation of the three-position switch and the continuous mechanical
interlock between circuitbreaker and three-position switch are designed in
such a way that the operator can proceed as usual. This means separate,
completely interlocked actuation for the switching procedures Establishing
isolating distance and Earthing. For the earthing procedure, which is only
possible with the three-position switch in isolated position, the circuit-breaker
switched off and the circuit-breaker energy-storing device pre-charged, the
circuitbreaker is connected positively after the contact blades have
beeninserted into the earthing contacts, and protected against immediate
mechanical or electrical switching OFF. Vice versa, on de-earthing, the
circuit-breaker is first switched off positively before the isolating distance to
the earthing contacts established. The interlocks ensure that each
switching operation is always performed completely. Thus, once the
switching operation has commenced, the motion cannot be reversed, if
applicable, and the operating lever cannot be removed before it reaches its
end position.
The description only refers to the single busbar. In the case of double
busbars, some of the internal interlocking functions of the panel, as well as
all inter-panel interlocking functions are performed by electro-mechanical
interlocks (blocking coil).
The following interlocking functions are provided:
Disconnector does not switch ON while the circuit-breaker or the earthing
switch are ON
None of the disconnectors switches OFF while the circuit-breaker or the
earthing switch are ON
Circuit-breaker only switches ON with the disconnector in its end position
No earthing with disconnector engaged
No earthing with circuit-breaker ON
No earthing without circuit-breaker being in ready-to-operate condition
Automatic connection of circuitbreaker during earthing
Automatic disconnection of circuit- breaker during de-earthing
The following has been ensured:
The operating crank cannot be removed from the disconnector or
earthing switch before it has reached its end positions completely
The circuit-breaker cannot be actuated while a switching operation is
being performed on the disconnector or earthing switch
The circuit-breaker cannot be switched off with the three-position switch
in earthing position
All interlocks act partly mechanically and partly electrically
An operating crank can only be inserted on the disconnector or earthing
switch once the insertion opening has been released via a manual
interrogation system.
All interlocks also effective when the three-position switch is
motor-actuated.

WI Cable connections

Cable connections in outgoing feeder block

The medium-voltage cables are connected to the switchgear panels via
metal-enclosed inner cone-type plug-in terminations. The panels are
equipped with inner cone-type appliance couplers according to EN 50 181.
The manufacturers specifications of the regarding selection and assembly
of the plug-in terminations must be adhered to. This does not only apply to
the selection of size, but also to all electrical rated data, in line with the
switchgears data.
It is essential that all appliance couplers which are not equipped with
plug-in terminations are terminated correctly using voltage-proof and fully
shrouded insulating terminals/ dummy plugs.
To this effect, the inner cone-type cable plug-in terminations for attachment
to WI require capacitive decoupling. The coupling electrodes for the
capacitive voltage detection system are an integral part of the appliance
couplers installed in the switchgear panel.

WI Ecological considerations

A WI switchgear satisfies to a high degree ecological requirements in view

of environmental protection thanks to
optimization of material and energy consumption during manufacture
compliance with all ecological requirements during its service life
the use of recyclable materials for efficient disposal at the end of its
service life.
Our design directives regarding environmentally compatible design specify
the use of materials which are easily recyclable and can be disassembled.
The metals which make up approx. 90 % of the switchgear are easily
recyclable. At the end of their service life, they are recycled 100 % in the
form of homogenous materials.
Plastics can also be recycled. Thermosetting i.e. non-melting plastics
can be comminuted and reused as fillers in other plastic components;
thermoplastic - i.e. melting - materials can be recycled in the form of
homogenous material. This means that the material is conserved, melted
down and used for the construction of new durable parts.
To ensure efficient and environmentally compatible disassembly and
assignment of materials by the responsible disposal experts, the
switchgears plastic components have been identified accordingly.
Moreover, material and utilization data sheets are available to provide the
customer with an over- view about the materials used. Equally, the disposal
company is provided with important information regarding the recycling process.
Thus, the materials used for our products can be reused 100 %.
This represents a major contribution towards saving primary energy and
material resources.
All materials were selected and developed so that e.g. in case of fire within
buildings, affected switchgear only have a minor influence on the fire load
(heat development, pollutants in the emissions).
Another important ecological aspect is the longevity of our products (min.
30 to 40 years), which is an extremely long service life compared to other
capital goods. Furthermore, the switchgear units have been designed so as
to require little maintenance which would in turn use up energy and material,
and so as to enable straightforward replacement of part components, e.g. if
new controllers have been developed on the market (upgrading).
In our gas-insulated switchgear WI, the majority of the switchgear panel
has been sealed hermetically in an insulating inert gas (sulphur
hexafluoride SF6 which is neither reactive nor toxic). Thus, all
environmental influences reducing the service life are shut out. The special
characteristics of the insulating gas also enable an overall size reduction by
approx. 50 percent versus switchgear designed without insulating gas with
comparable technical properties. This again saves a lot of material and
energy required for material production. The portion of insulating gas used
for WI switchgear amounts to approx. 0.5 percent by weight. Once the
switchgears service life has elapsed, the gas is extracted completely via
the disposal valve provided serially in each gas-filled, cladded
compartment, and then recycled. The gas suppliers have developed an
efficient recycling concept to this effect.
During normal operation, the gas need not be replenished during the entire
service life of the switchgear. The switchgear is a hermetically sealed
pressure system acc. to IEC 60694 (IEC 62271-1).

Transporting the switchgear unit

When transporting the switchgear unit, it is important to ensure that the
transport units do not slip or tilt (if necessary, nail transport pallet down to
the loading surface). Reuse the original packaging to store parts which
have been unpacked for inspection.

Packaging of the switchgear

If packed for truck transport, the switchgear unit is delivered on a pallet
with PE protective film.
For sea-worthy transport, the units are packed in sealed aluminium film
with desiccant and in a closed case with tightly closed wooden base.
In case of air transport, the switchgear unit is packed in a wooden crate
with closed wooden base and with a blister IPE film as dust protection or
in a wooden case, also with closed wooden base.

Transport to the site of installation

Store under conditions admissible for switchgear operation. Avoid
condensation.
