The main purpose of writing is to convey a message
to an audience of readers or to inform an audience. Through my experiences as a writer, my first preconception is that grammar, spelling, and the organization of a piece of writing needs to be correct in order to make it easy for the audience to understand. Because of this, writers must have a knowledge of language, as explained by David Crystal towards the end of his article. However, with new forms of writing such as texting and shorthand, some linguists believe that language is being wrecked, and that it masks dyslexia. While this is a legitimate fear surrounding a new form of language, nobody has the ability to write in shorthand with a strong knowledge of the language and of the audience that they are writing to. A writer has to create a message that is understandable to who they are trying to reach. With the evolution of texting has brought new forms of artistic writing, such as SMS poetry. Even SMS novels have surfaced, like the one Chinese writer Xuan Huang. The story was told in 1008 Chinese characters, over 15 chapters, with one chapter being released to an audience everyday via SMS text. Texting is not an invention of a new language brought upon the world by devils, but rather a modern twist on one that has been carefully and artistically manipulated over thousands of years.
