I would like to thank my teacher for her guidance in helping me complete this internal assessment. I would
also like to thank the form six students of Barrackpore West Secondary for their time and patience when
being interviewed.

INTRODUCTION

For this Caribbean Studies Internal Assessment, the main aim is to observe the use of internet among the
form six students at Barrackpore West Secondary and how it affects their academic performance and social
behaviour. The Internet is a relatively new channel for scholarly resources, and contains vast quantities of
information that vary a great deal regarding its contents, aim, target group, reliability etc. Hence, it is
important that the end-user is aware of the diverse information available on the Internet, and educated in the
criteria by which the information content should be assessed. Students can also become a victim of
behavioural change due to what they may be doing on the internet and what might be influencing them. This
is why I think it is important to find out how the internet uses affect these form six students academic
performance and social behaviour.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
To investigate internet uses among form six students of Barrackpore West Secondary and its impact on their
academic performance and social behaviour.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The research seeks to answers the following questions in the course of this investigation.

1 To investigate internet use among the form six students at Barrackpore West Secondary School?
2 To investigate the impact of internet use on the academic performance of form six students at
Barrackpore West Secondary School?
3 To investigate the impact of internet and how it affects social behaviour of form six students?
BACKGROUND TO STUDY

This research was conducted at the Barrackpore West Secondary School which is located at #883 Papourie
Road, Barrackpore. This school has an average of sixty form six students combine together in both lower
and upper. I think that this investigation would be relevant to the form six of the school due to the increase
of internet use over the years. Academic achievement is an important parameter in measuring success in
students.

Research stated that academic standard had fallen drastically and the quality of graduates being produced by
the nations universities is questionable and subject to re-examination. Poor academic achievement of
students has been of great concern to educationists, government and the public in general. The frequency of
Internet use was not related to symptoms of depression, and most specific types of Internet use were also
unrelated, suggesting that Internet use is not a major cause or consequence of depression.

VALUE OF RESEARCH

Many students today are the ones that make use of the internet the most and can therefore have significant
impact on academic performance and social behaviour of these students.

This purpose of this study is to inform teachers, principals, parents and especially the students that that
amount of time spend on the internet and what I the major reason for doing so. It is mainly to show the
consequences of using the internet and how it can easily affect the academic performance and social
behaviour of the student. The result of this student can be used by the education system to have a better
understanding of how academic performance and social behaviour can be affected by the use of internet.
Together with this, it can also assist them in finding ways to solve the problems that any student may have
from using the internet.

METHODOLGY
DATA COLLECTION SOURCE

Primary Data Source- Questionnaires was used to conduct a small survey to collect data/information from
the form six students of Barrackpore West Secondary School.

Secondary Data Source - The use of books and the internet was used to gathered information for the
literature review, to design a questionnaire and for the recommendation.

Research Method This research was done doing a small survey. Surveys are a method of gathering
information from individuals. Surveys have a variety of purposes, and can be conducted in many ways.
Surveys may be conducted to gather information through a printed questionnaire, over the telephone, by
mail, in person, by diskette, or on the web. Quantitative analysis was used.

Data Collection Instrument- A questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data from the for six
students (refer to Appendix 1). Questionnaires are a set of printed or written questions with a choice of
answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study. A total of 50 questionnaires were
distributed, each consisting of 16 questions.

Targeted population- All the form six students of Barrackpore West Secondary were the targeted
population for this study. The student sample size for this study is 50.

Interview- The interviews was conducted from the 3rd December to the 10th December 2016. The purpose
of doing this study was explained to the participating students to ensure that their response would be
confidential.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE- Academic achievement refers to a student's success in meeting short- or


long-term goals in education

UNDERACHIEVEMENT - Underachievement is defined as a discrepancy between a child's school


performance and his or her actual ability

BEHAVIOUR- the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others.

INTERNET- The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers.

PERFORMANCE- An action in which excellence or superiority depend primarily on abstract mental


ability. Any action requiring the manipulation of abstracts, concepts or mental manipulation of any sort.
LITERATURE REVIEW

Technology is constantly evolving and changing how we do things. Recently many more
technological modes of communication were introduced on the global market, giving access to many
adolescents. School-aged children can communicate with both people they know and strangers through
communication sources that are not face-to-face. The study revealed that in general, students there had
positive attitudes towards learning through the Internet. The students had the basic skills in using the
Internet and perceived the learning environment in the university conducive to the use of the Internet as a
learning tool. According to (Kumar & Kaur, 2004) who studied the use of internet by teachers and students
in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering & Technology, Ferozepur (Panjab) found that 46.7%
teachers and 36.7% students daily use the internet. About 90% respondents use internet at their college.
Yahoo is found as the favorite search engine. Only 31.7% respondents. were fully satisfied, whereas 36.7%
were partially satisfied with internet facilities.

Additionally (Ruzgar, 2005) studied the purpose of the Internet use and learning via Internet. It was
concluded that the Internet has become an integral part of college life and its usage is approaching 100
percent among students. It was found that 36 percent of the students spent 1-10 hours per week on the
Internet. Regarding activities online, sending/receiving e-mail topped the list, followed by reading news and
finding sports information, research for school-related work, chat, research for products and services, and
downloading images. Because of their online activities, students watched less television.

According to (Biradar,2006) conducted a study on internet usage by the Student and faculties in
Kuvempu University. The results indicated that 42.1 % students use internet twice a week and 31.25%
faculties use it every day. The majority of students as well as faculties use Internet for study/ teaching
purpose. The favourite place for using Internet is library followed by commercial places. A thumping
majority of respondents are satisfied with Internet sources and services.

Moreover, students have only recently received the opportunity to use the Internet to seek and obtain
scholarly material and, consequently, knowledge on how effectively they make use of this channel is
limited. Students information seeking culminates as they work on their theses. Many studies have been
conducted regarding the type of information the end-users seek and obtain on the Internet and in which
circumstances they prefer electronic sources to paper sources (Tenopir et al. 2003). According to their
survey, approximately 50% of all the scholarly publications were obtained from the Internet, who studied
geography students use of sources on the Internet by analyzing citations from a test, found that 51% of the
citations referred to sources on paper, 47% of the sources were from the Internet and the rest was course
material. (Fescemeyer, 2000)

In another study, (Iboronke, 2002) has attributed the poor performance to the rise in students
enrolment without corresponding increase in the material and human resources. In this study the effect of
these materials and human resources on students performance will be investigated. The use of the available
learning resources will improve the academic performance of students. In order words, one of the
opportunities to stimulate this elaboration process is by offering students more and more diverse learning
resources. Ogunleyes (2003) review that under laboratory conditions increasing the richness and diversity
of the learning materials has often been shown to support students in learning, remembering and applying
information.

Internet access in schools has increased greatly over the last 20 years (Berson, 2000).Many experts see the
computer, combined with multimedia capabilities, as the new tool that can transform education (Van Horn,
1991) points out that the computer can solve many of the problems facing teachers. In todays environment
the teacher is expected to have a large knowledge base. The teacher also has the problem of deciding to
teach at the low end or the high end of the grade level. Many compromise and teach in the middle.
Computers can solve these two problems by enabling teachers to customize instruction for each student
(McKeown, 1991).

The advent of the widespread use of the Internet in the 1990s was met with both fear and enthusiasm
regarding the potential impact on social relationships and psychological well-being (Bargh & McKenna,
2004). However, a relatively early study by Kraut and associates (Kraut et al., 1998) seemed to set the tone
for much of the research that would follow. They found that use of the Internet appeared to increase
loneliness, depression, and stress among a sample of 169 adults. They called this the Internet Paradox in
that a technology that theoretically would increase communication could instead have negative social and
psychological effects. Even though the results actually reversed in a follow-up study published several years
later (Kraut et al. 2002), the original study inspired a significant amount of research designed to assess
potential negative effects of Internet use. (Young and Rogers, 1998) study was also influential in generating
interest in the relationship between Internet addiction and depression.

Relatively recent studies focusing on Internet addiction among college students have tended to find
primarily negative correlates. A study conducted by (Martin and Schumaker,2000) who investigated the
relationship between pathological Internet use (PIU) and loneliness among 277 undergraduate students.
They found that loneliness was associated with pathological use. In a later reanalysis of the same data
(Morahan-Martin & Schumaker, 2003), they found that lonely users were more likely than the non-lonely to
seek emotional support online, find more satisfaction with online versus offline friends, and to be
experiencing more disturbances in their daily lives.

ANALYSIS OF DATA
This study was done to investigate how the use of internet had affected academic performance as well as
social behaviour among the form six students of Barrack pore West Secondary. In total, 50 questionnaires
were distributed by a random sampling method to the form six students.From the information that was
collected, it was shown that 65% of the respondents were male and the remaining 35% were female. The
minority of the student respondents (20%) were 16 years of age and the remaining 80% were ages 17 (40%)
and 18(40%).

The first study question was to investigate internet use among the form six students at Barrackpore West
Secondary School.

When it comes to internet access, 80% of the students had access to internet at their home while 20% did
not had access to the internet at home. In joining with this same question, all the students (100%) agreed
that they had access to internet at school. When asked how often so these students use the internet, half of
them (50%) said that they used it every day, 30% used it more than once a day, 10% used it once a week,
5% used it once a month and the remaining 5% used the internet less than once a month. The majority of the
students who responded (70%) stated that they used the inter more than four hours a day while 15% used
the internet for 3-4 hours a day, 10% used it for 1-2 hours a day and only 5% used the internet for less than
1 hour a day.Do you use the internet to do research? This question was answered as yes by all the students
(100%) and when asked how helpful the internet was, again they all agreed that it was very helpful. Over
half of the respondent (60%) stated that social media is what they like most about the internet, while 5%
said that online shopping is what they like most, 20% said doing research is what they like most and 15%
said listening music is what they like most about the internet. Other than doing school work on the internet
70% of them said that they listen to music, 5% said that they watch videos and 25% said that they use social
media.

The second study question was to investigate the impact of internet use on the academic performance of
form 6 students of Barrackpore West Secondary School.

Ninety percent (90%) of the students said that the internet helped them in achieving their CSEC subjects
because it provided them with useful information. The other 10% said that it was not helpful because they
did not get the required information they needed. Seventy percent(70%) of the students said that the internet
help them in a major way in their Internal Assessment while the remaining 30% said that it was no help to
them. When asked how helpful it was, 35% stated that it was helpful and 35% stated that it was very help
wile the next 30% said it was not helpful at all. Ninety five percent( 95%) of the students all reply and said
that if they had no access to the internet, it would have been difficult for them to pass their CSEC
examination while the remaining 5% said that it would not have been difficult. When asked is internet use
necessary to achieve academic success, 100% of them agreed that it was needed and when ask how
necessary, 20% of them said that it was necessary and 80% of them said that it was very necessary. Again
100% of them said that the internet all helped them with their current studies.

The final study question was to investigate the impact of internet and how it affects social behaviour of
form six students

These students were asked how the internet has affected various things. Ninety five percent of them said
that it do not affect the way they communicate with friend while 5% said it does affect them and the same
result was presented when ask how the internet has influence how they socialize with their friends. 5% said
it affected the way in which they dress, 70% said that it affected the kind of music they listen to, 20% said
that it do not affect how often they participate in religion, 30% said that it do not affect the time spent with
their family and 80% said that it affects their involvement in physical activities. When ask which do they
prefer, 95% of the students stated that they prefer face to face communication over communication via the
internet. Eighty five (85%) of them prefer spending time with their family doing leisure activities while
15% prefer to spend time on the internet. In relation to this, all the students (100%) said that by them
spending time on the internet, does not cause any family conflict. Finally, 80% of them said that the internet
had positively affected their academic success while 20% said that it did not. Also, only 15% said that it did
affect their social behaviour while 85% said that it did not affect their social behaviour.

DISCUSSION

The Internet has introduced improvements in technology, communication and online entertainment, but it is
also incredibly useful for education purposes as well. Teachers use the Internet to supplement their lessons,
and a number of prestigious universities have opened up free online lectures and courses to everyone.

In a study done by Ridzuan and Kuek, they found that only 36.7% of the students used the internet on a
daily basis. In contrast to my study, it showed that 50% of the students used the internet on a daily basis.
Ruzgar (2005) studied the purpose of the Internet use and learning via Internet. It was concluded that the
Internet has become an integral part of secondary school life and its usage is approaching 100 percent
among students. It was found that 36 percent of the students spent 1-10 hours per week on the Internet.
When referring to my study, it was clearly obvious that 100% of the students used the internet. This was the
exact same result Ruzgar found in his study. Because of their online activities, students watched less
television. Biradar and others (2006) conducted a study on internet usage by the Student and faculties in
Kuvempu University. The results indicated that 42.1 % students use internet twice a week and 31.25%
faculties use it every day. The majority of students as well as faculties use Internet for study/ teaching
purpose. This result differ from my study because in my study it showed that 5% of the students used the
internet for less than 1 hour a day, 10% for 1-2 hours a day, 15% for 3-4 hours a day and 70% for more than
four hours a day. Since the majority of students use the internet for more than four hours a day, it is clear
that they will spend more than 10 hours per week as stated by Ruzgar. As for the study done at Kuvempu
University, my result also differ because my study shows that 50% used the internet everyday with 30%
using it more than once a week. The reason for this is because not all students have readily access to
internet.

According to a study done by Tenopir, 50% of the students achievements have been obtained by the use of
the internet. In relation to my study, it showed that 95% of the students needed the internet in order to make
passing their CSEC subjects easier. Also, my study showed that 100% of the students firmly believe that
internet use in most definitely need in order to achieve academic success. In his study, he also stated that
47% of the students information came directly from the internet. There is a large variation compare o my
student because 90% of the students in my student stated that the internet provided them with sources for
the CSEC preparations and 70% stated that it helped them in their Internal Assessment. This clearly shows
that at Barrackpore West Secondary School, students depend more on the information presented on the
internet.

Bargh and McKenna stated that the advent of the widespread use of the Internet in the 1990s was met with

being. A study done my Kraut stated that 80% of the people and students who use the internet gets lonely,
depress and more stress. This is the complete opposite of my study because it shows that aside from school
work, these students actually use the internet as a way of entertainment whether it be music, games, social

daily lives. Again their study done was in no where closely related to my. They believe that the internet
cause change in students social behaviour and lead to depression etc. with my study, the students actually
use the internet to get avoid spending time with their family
LIMITATIONS

1. The study was limited to 50 students of Barrackpore West Secondary.


2. The study only focuses on form 6 students.
3. The interview that was conducted only used questionnaires to obtain the data.
4. The structure of the questionnaire could have cause a bit of misinterpreted response from the
students.
5. The data collected cannot be used for another school or even a larger population of students.
6. The presence of the interviewer may have affected the answer the respondent wanted to give. It could
have affected the answer both positively and negatively.

RECOMMENDATION

During the course of the past couple of years, the ways people use the internet have developed
tremendously especially for students of secondary school. The internet has been a daily routine use for the
majority of students all over. What many of them do not realize is that by spending too much time on the
internet and using it for the wrong reasons can have an impact on their academic performance as well as
their social behaviour. This impact can be both positively and negatively.

In order for these students to maintain a good performance in school and dont let the internet affect their
behaviour, they need to know what is right and what is wrong. This is where parents, teacher etc comes in.
They are the main people for teaching these students about what is right and wrong about the use of the
internet. Even though, the form six students might be a little more mature and knowledgeable about the
situation, some of them still end up leading the wrong path. Aside from the parents and teachers teaching
them what right, it is also up to the students themselves to know what exactly they are doing while using the
internet. They should put their education first and make sure it is well taken of before engaging in other
activities. They must also realize that what the internet can lead to later on and be responsible in the way
they use it.

CONCLUSION

After the completion of this study, the date was analyzed and some conclusion can be drawn from it. It can
be concluded that the form six students of Barrack pore West Secondary School do indeed use the internet
to a large extent for many various reasons whether it be research, school work or entertainment. A lot of
them even depend heavily on the internet to be successful in their current students and have confess that it
even help them passed their CSEC examination. It can also be finalize that most of them do not have such
poor academic performance due to the use of internet but in relation to social behaviour, it has changed
some of them as previously stated above. All in all it can be concluded that the internet is very useful for the
form six students of Barrackpore West Secondary School and that they indeed need it to assist them in
school. This is only to a certain extent as they use they also use the internet for socialization and
entertainment. The internet has seen from the study change the way few of the students carry about
themselves, example, the way they dress.
