How and when to use
the resources and 1. Give students a brief introduction
materials used in the
o Remember how last week (or whenever you
lesson
took the pictures) I took pictures of each of you
but I told you that you would soon find out why?
Well today is the day we are finally going to use
them! You will put the picture of yourself in a fun
background then create a story based on your
picture. Sounds fun right? Lets get started.
2. Ask some guiding questions to get students thinking
about creating a story about an imaginary situation
o Have any of you wanted to create your own
story about whatever you want? And best of all
you are the main character? Raise your thumb
up if you have wanted to and put your thumb
down if you have never wanted to
o What would your story be about? Would it be
scary, funny, or something else? Would your
story have a happy or sad ending? Have a few
students answer
o In between answers ask Do any of you have the
same idea? How is your different or similar? and
answer a few students in between to start a
discussion.
3. Pass out the directions worksheet (see below) that
shows students how to find their picture, select it,
add a background, and then save it.
4. Now it is time to lead them through the process
o I handed out a direction sheet that lists every
step we will do to put our picture into a
background, but I will also be doing my own
along with you so we can stay on track and not
get too lost
5. Pull up the website on each of the students
computers
http://www.photofacefun.com/?section_id=20
6. First show them around the website and the options
Make sure students stay on the kids section
o As we scroll through this page we see many fun
backgrounds that we can select, take a second to
look at them all
7. Now model choosing a background
o I really like this Superman background. Now
select what background you like and click on it
o Put your thumb up if you found one and put your
thumb down if you need more time
o Walk around and assist the ones who put their
thumb down.
8. Show students how to find their picture in the file and
upload it to the background
o Now students click the Choose File button. Look
up to see which button I am talking about. Now from
there you will find our class file under Desktop
o Put a thumbs up if you found it and a thumbs down
if you need help
o Walk around and help students get to the file that
need help, this is tricky for students so make sure
everyone is on the same page before moving on.
o Great! We have all found the file. Now find your
picture in the folder. Once you found it click on it.
o Show students how you found the file and your own
picture so they have a visual comparison.
o Help students move the cropping box so it fits their
face
o Now put a thumb up if you are finished and a thumb
down if you need more help
o Make sure each child has created their picture and is
happy with it. This may take some time but be
patient, they will love it.
9. Save students pictures
o Now I am going to walk around and save each of
your beautiful and funny new pictures to my special
folder so I can print them while you are writing
o Go around to each student and save their pictures in
a file you created
10. NOTE: This step can be done at the same time as
step 8. Give students instructions on the writing
activity and go over rubric
o Here is the best part. You will each write your own
story about your picture that you made. Talk about
what is happening and what you are doing in your
picture. Dont forget that a story contains a
beginning, middle, and end. Also dont forget to use
at least two transition words.
o So look at the picture you made on your computer
and start with that until I have your pictures printed
out
o You will be graded on your creative your story is so
have fun with it. You will also be graded on whether
your story has a beginning, middle, and end and if
you used 2 transition words (you could use more!).
Lastly you will be graded on your spelling and
punctuation, such as complete. So try your best.
o Now hand out a piece of writing paper to each
student and project the grading rubric on the
projector or pass a copy out to each student.
11. While students are working print out each of their
pictures that they created and hand them out to the
students.
12. Have students present their writing and show their
picture.
