Lesson Plan

Name: Shannon Strosser Date: Day Four Grade: Three

Focus: Basketball

Subfocus: Shooting

Objectives:

SWBAT demonstrate three of the four cues during a shot in a closed setting.
SWBAT to recall the acronym BEEF.

SOL Objectives:
3.1.a The student will demonstrate mature form for a variety of skills and apply skills in
increasingly complex movement activities: demonstrate the critical elements for dribbling
with the preferred hand.
3.2.a The student will identify major structures of the body to include body systems,
muscles, and bones, and identify basic movement principles: apply the concept of open
space while moving.

Cues:
Dribble: Knees bent, finger pads, eyes up, waist level
Freeze: Hold the basketball and step side to side
Chest pass: Ball at chest level, step towards target, extend arms toward target releasing the ball
ending with thumbs facing down
Bounce pass: Ball at chest level, steps towards target, extend arms to target thumbs facing down,
ball should bounce about 75% of the way to target
Passes: bend, extend, release
Shoot: BEEF
Balance=feet shoulder width apart, knees bent
Eyes=aim on back of the rim
Elbow=90 degree angle, holding the ball in one hand
Follow through=straighten your elbow and flick your wrist as if you were reaching in a cookie
jar

Assessment:
Formative Assessment During Shooting

Materials/Equipment: 18 basketballs, 50 poly spots, 4 hula hoops

Area Diagram:
Safety Precautions:
Students were taught proper skills and monitored throughout activities to maintain safe play.

Instant Activity (2-3 minutes):

Grab a basketball, start dribbling around the gym using the three cues we have been
practicing!

When I say go, I want you to be in freeze position in the center circle. (Half of students should
have a ball at this point for the next activity)
Introduction (3 minutes): Today, we are going to continue to work on our basketball unit.

Content Development (2-3 minutes):

Before we get started I want to review the proper cues of a chest and bounce pass. I gave you
three words last class to try and help you remember how to perform a chest pass. Bend, extend,
and release.
For a chest pass:
Bend: ball at chest level bend knees
Extend: step toward target, extend arms
Release: release ball with thumbs pointing down
What is the one difference between a bounce pass and a chest pass?

T1: Hungry Hungry Hippos(5-7 minutes)

To continue practicing dribbling and passing we are going to play a game called
hungry hungry hippos. The object of this game is to collect as many bean bags
from the center of the court as you can and return them back to your hula hoop.
There are hula hoops placed throughout the boundary of the gym. The person in
the front of the line is going to dribble the ball to pick up a bean bag. They are
going to dribble the ball in one hand and carry the bean bag in the other. You are
going to drop the bean bag in the hula hoop and pass the ball to your partner from
the hula hoop. If you are not dribbling the ball you are going to perform one of
four exercises: jumping jacks, lunges, squats or modified push ups. What is your
job if you are dribbling the ball? (go and pick up a bean bag) What are you doing
if you are not dribbling the ball? (One of the four exercises) What are the four
exercises you can do? Play until all the bean bags are out of the center.
Extensions:
Students can choose type of ball to use
Red playground ball, basketball, modified basketball
Students can pass closer to their partner
Students can pass farther away from their partner

When I say go I want everyone to walk and start stepping side to side in the center circle. Ready,
GO.

T2: Shooting Instruction (3-5 minutes teacher led)

Now today we are going to learn how to shoo the basketball so you can score
points in the game! In order to teach us how to take a good shot we are going to
learn the acronym BEEF. B stands for balance. (Feet shoulder width apart, and
knees bent) Eyes=focused on the back of the rim. Elbow=one hand is the shooting
hand, your elbow is going to be right under the ball, the other hand is the guiding
hand and is simply there to hold the ball in place. Follow through=flick your
wrist, reaching into a cookie jar.

Have students repeat: Balance, eyes, elbow and follow through. How can you get
more power if your shot is not reaching the basket? (use your legs) I dont want to
see any granny shots or chicken wings today! Without a ball I want everyone to
copy me. Balance-Eyes-Elbow-Follow Through

T3: Shooting in Self Space(3-5 minutes)

The first task we are going to do today is to practice shooting in self space. I want
you to find personal space and practice using BEEF. When you are shooting in
self space I want you to shoot straight into the air. (Observe students).
Extensions:
Allow students to choose ball
Challenge:
Have students create a hoop with their hands and count how many times the ball can bounce
through hoop
Easier:
Have students aim against a wall
When I say go I want everyone to dribble to the center circle and stand in freeze position.

T4: Hot Shots (7-10 minutes)

Great job shooting and using our term BEEF. The object of the game is to try and
get as many spots as you can for your team. Everyone is going to have a ball and
you are going to be dribbling around the gym. When you find a spot you are
going to stand on it, take a shot, if you make the shot you are going to pick the
spot up and dribble the ball back to your teams poly spot and find a new poly spot
to get. If you miss the basket, find a new basket to go to. What do you do if you
make a basket? What do you do if someone is at a poly spot that you wanted to go
to? What happens if you miss a basket? (Hung onto the basket are two hula hoops
taped together, students are allowed to shoot in any hula hoop they want.)
Extensions:
Allow students to choose ball
Challenge:
Shoot in the main hoop
Make it in the main hoop without hitting the backboard
Easier
Students can shoot at any of the hula hoops to achieve success

When I say go, I want everyone to walk and start stepping side to side in the circle.
Culminating Activity (7-12 minutes) Invasion Basketball
Now we are going to play a modified version of basketball. There are going to be two
teams. Each team is going to try and score through their hula hoop holder. Each team is
going to have the hula hoop holder. The hula hoop holders job is to hold the hula hoop
over their head and be moving around the gym. The rest of the team is going to try and
dribble and pass the balls to score into the hoop. The maximum number of dribbles you
can take is five so you must work together to score in the hoop. We are going to use
playground balls to start. If you have the hula hoop you must count the number of points
the team scores.
What is the hula hoop holders job?
Can someone defend the hula hoop?
How many steps can you take?
How can you work with your team to score in the opposing hula hoop?
Extensions:
Start without being able to defend the hula hoop
Defend hula hoop
No dribbling
Everyone must touch the ball

Closure (10-15 minutes):

To end class, we are on our fourth day of basketball, can someone remind me a cue we learned
for a chest pass? Can someone remind me of a cue we learned for a bounce pass? What ways did
you and your teammate find success in the game? When you are playing basketball is it
important to move to find open space? When shooting what acronym do we use? BEEF!
