Enduring Understandings:
Big Ideas: The students will understand that
Each 3-D shape has unique attributes, including faces, edges, and
vertices, each shape has unique plane shapes that go along with it,
there are multiple ways to add and subtract mentally
Concepts: addition, subtraction, identifying shapes
Essential Questions:
What is an edge and where is it?
What is a face and where is it?
What are vertices and where are they?
What is this object?
What is the plane shape that is on the bottom of (blank) shape?

Students will be assessed during this lesson on their listening skills and
through answering questions that will be asked throughout the lesson, as well
as filling out the worksheet focusing on shape attributes.
Action/Instructional Procedures
Procedures: For each procedure, list the teacher or student actions (with
accommodations and modifications) as well as the anticipated amount of time it will take
to accomplish each task.

Anticipatory Set: (hook) We are going to start math today by looking at this
addition problem. When you think you have the answer I want you to put your
hands on your head. Make sure you dont say the answer out loud once you know
what it is! (go around the group and ask students what they found for their
answers) Who can tell me how they got their answer? (wait for student responses,
have short discussion about different ways to get the answer)
Step One: Now before our vacation, we started learning about different shapes
and different parts of the shapes. Does anyone remember what we learned about
these shapes? (wait for student response) yes! We learned about different shapes
and their edges, faces, and vertices. If I hold up this object, who can tell me what
is it called? (hold up different shapes and ask students what the shape is called).
Step Two: Great work! Who can point to one of the faces (vertices, edges) on this
cube? Yes, this cube has many faces, edges and vertices. A lot of the other shapes
that we have also have many faces, edges, and vertices.
Step Three: We are going to do a worksheet together now and we are going to
work on identifying different parts of the shapes and different shapes all together.
(Go through worksheets together, slowly discussing each shape).
Step Four: Nice work friends! Now that we have worked on identifying different
shapes, we are going to learn about the shapes that make up one of these 3
dimensional objects. If I was going to trace the bottom of this pyramid, what
shape do you think we would get? (wait for student response, repeat with a few
objects). The shapes that make up the 3-D objects, are called plane shapes. Can
you say that after me? (plane shapes). We are going to try to find out what shapes
make up all of our 3-D objects in our math magazine now. (go through math
magazine).
All other steps: Wow friends, we have done some great work! I would now like
you to raise your hand if you would like to pick out a math center. (wait for
students) if you would like to go on iReady, you may do that also.
