Context-Problem-Response

Globally, graffiti has grown into a major manifestation of artwork being displayed

publicly in urban areas. For example, the city of Paris is known for elegant scenarios but with an

explosion of interest in street art it is also being used as a public street art gallery. An anonymous

graffiti artist known as Banksy has created many impressive stencil graffiti in the streets of Paris

and in other major cities around the world. Banksy stencil graffiti created a movement towards

beginner or advance graffiti artists to explore a completely new idea of street art. Even from an

anonymous artist like Banksy, people are so fascinated by the graffiti work being presented but

struggle to understand the amount of techniques being used to create the piece. Society has a bias

effect on graffiti as being a disruption to the community without looking at the artistic values and

time being put into creating the graffiti piece. Although it is a sign of vandalism, graffiti should

be considered as art because it has established different types of style and colored features that

provides meaning for its intended audience.

1. CLAIM: Graffiti does not have one solid design, in fact it has many different types of

styles.

a. Banksy=stencil, Katsu=tags, Horfe= cartoonist

b. Original artwork, it is not branched out from previous artworks

c. Spray painting is the essential tool to create graffiti

2. CLAIM: Has created influential movements

a. Graffiti Art 1980s were Basquiat and Haring embraced this movement of spray

can graffiti in several galleries in New York

b. Chicano Movement 1960s Bojorquez was a well-known graffiti artist who

displayed mural art to show minority power

3. CLAIM: Can qualify as the definition of art

a. Art: the expression or application of human skills and imagination to produce

works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

b. The work is being created by an artist, human creative skills or imagination to

express important feelings

c. The object or presentation has a significance on a subject, may be criticize

Addressing the Opposite Side

1st opposing view: A sign of vandalism

o Refutation: Permission walls are created to produce legal artwork in a given

space.

2nd opposing view: Damage of property

o Refutation: The removal process may cause more damage on some surface that

can cause huge public costs

Conclusion

Graffiti is not formally introduced into society rather it appears in public area without any

acknowledge. Society is modernized to accept an art work when it is presented in an art gallery

or displayed in a museum because it has recognition from a higher status. Graffiti artists has the

freedom to exploit their ideas on a canvas and help create a positive interaction between their

design to their intended audience. Graffiti has all the essentials make up of any other traditional

art such as having form, color, shape, etc. Although graffiti is seen as a sign of vandalism, it is

overall considered as art because the designs gives meaning towards its intended audience.
