Unit Title: Real World Geometry Name: Almar Turriaga

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 7th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
CCSSM 7.G.1
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale
drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.

CCSSM 7.G.5
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects
composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
Conceptual connections between one-, two-, three- dimensions and the amount of length, area or space it measures,
or represents.
These concepts will eventually extend to higher mathematics for a deeper understanding of linear (Ax+B), quadratic
(Ax^2+Bx+C), cubic functions (Ax^3+Bx^2+Cx+D), non-Euclidean Geometry, and Vectors.
---------------------------------------------

We will first learn about dimension in general, then apply that to:
1. Perimeter (one dimension)
2. Area (two dimensions)
3. Volume (three dimensions)
4. Surface Area, which is the two dimensional area of a three dimensional object.
We will increase the vocabulary (words, terms) for the forms, shapes, and solids, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional
regular (uniformly shaped) objects.
Unit Summary:
Note: There is much flexibility in this Unit Plan to progress through one topic at a time of: perimeter, area, and volume. To
pause, reflect and assess for understanding before moving to the next topic. The Teacher Lecture and Webercise then
becomes a triple, first with progressing through each dimension of space, then working on problems for each: perimeter, area,
volume. The students have an opportunity to show comprehensive understanding of a particular topic by creating their own
math problems in a Popplet.(individual summative assessment)

Finally, there is a comprehensive group project, Gallery/Exhibition Design, which should bring together all the skills and topics
covered.
----------------------------------------------
The students will increase their comprehension about various geometric forms, and their respective formulas for area, surface
area for triangles, regular polygons and quadrilaterals, cubes and right prisms, apply these to mathematical problems, then to
word problems, and finally to more complex problems.

We will also need to learn about scale (these are ratios), such as 1:10, this means, for example, 1cm measured on the scale
drawing equals 10cm in the real world.

Once we have enough tools (math skills), we may use those tools for a problem like this:

Given this project, you must calculate the required amount of material (paint) for the various surfaces in the given
environment. We will need measure the various dimensions, calculate out the total surface area to be painted, and then take
that number and see how much paint will be needed plus its cost.

(Students will need to strategize to measure, understand the coverage a specified quantity of paint will cover and cost, and
solve for a quantifiable result.)
