ELECTROSPUN NANOFIBERS FILTERS FOR WATER TREATMENT

Treatment of water is crucial in order to gain access to potable drinking water as un-treated water
contains wide range of hazardous constituents that may cause health problems. Nanofiber is a
non-woven material that can be produced by electrospinning process via electrostatic repulsion at
high voltage. For water treatment, nanofiber has been applied for desalination process, separation
of oily wastewater, removal of heavy metals from water and many more. This material with its
non-woven web-like filter structure effectively traps water-borne pathogens as well as other
water contaminants is ideal to be used as water filter media resulting to tasteless, odourless, and
safe drinking water. Besides that, the nanofibers water filter could also be designed to be
portable so that it could be used in the time of natural (flood, hurricanes, earthquakes) or man-
made disasters.
