BDA 30403 Group Project; Sem 2 Session 2016/2017

GAS TURBINE & RECIPROCATING COMPRESSOR

Task description:

1. You as a group of engineers in a power generation company are required to design a

gas turbine power plant that can provide power between 500 to 10,000 residential
homes.
2. Select your target population (number of houses) and estimate the amount of power
required.
3. Using your estimation, design a suitable gas turbine power plant, which is restricted
to the following limitations:
i. The selected ideal cycle must be at least of an actual cycle with a single
compressor and turbine;
ii. The temperature at the turbine inlet is not exceeding 1500C; and
iii. The designated thermal efficiency must not be below 50%.

4. Identify at least two design variables (control or uncontrolled variables) and study
how these variables affect the performance of your gas turbine power plant.
5. Furthermore, design a reciprocating compressor that is suitable for your system.
Please determine the size and speed of the compressor.
6. Show all the thermodynamics analysis clearly using appropriate schematic diagrams
and state clearly all the assumptions that have been made.

Notes:
Each group must write a full report and the format must abide the UTHMs THESIS
format and use the front cover provided (pg 2).
The report should be not less than 15 pages (excluding attachments/appendices).
Report presentation must also include the following contents:

i. TABLE OF CONTENTS
ii. CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
iii. CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
iv. CHAPTER 3: DESIGNS AND ANALYSIS
v. CHAPTER 4: DISCUSSION
vi. CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION
vii. REFERENCES
viii. APPENDICES (if necessary)

Provide also the group members assessment forms.

The report must be submitted by the end of Week 12th.
