o Serving Side- The side having the right to serve
o Receiving Side- The side opposing the serving side
o Short Service Line- The area closest to the net where a serve can not fall without committing a fault

Rules/Regulations:
o Serving:
o The shuttle must pass over the short service line on the opponents court or it is a fault
o At the start of a rally, the server and receiver must stand diagonally from each other
o The serve must be hit below waist height, underhand, and within the service area
o When the serving side loses a rally, the serve passes to the opponent
Name: Elizabeth White Grade Level: High School Subject Area: Physical Education
o In singles, the server stands on the right service court when the score is even, and the left side, when the score is odd
o In doubles, if the serving side wins a rally, the same player continues to serve, but changes service courts
o In doubles, if the opponent win the rally and the score is even, the right service court player serves
o In doubles, if the opponent win the rally and the score is odd, the left service court player serves
o The players service court is determined by where the players are standing at the start of the rally, not the end
o For the first rally of a doubles game, the serving pair may decide who serves first and the receiving team may decide
who receives first
o The server and receiver must remain within the service courts, until the server strikes the shuttle
o Scoring:
o Each game is played to 21 points
o A match is best of three games (sets)
o If the score reaches 21-all, then the game continues until one side gains a two point lead, up to a maximum of 30
points (therefore 30-29 is a winning score)
o Faults occur when the shuttle:
o Lands outside the court
o Passes through or under the net
o Does not pass over the net
o Touches the roof/ceiling/inside walls
o Touches a person/object out of bounds
o Is caught/held/slung on the racket
o Is hit twice in a row by a player on the same play
o If both partners hit the shuttle before it is returned

o The players change ends at the start of the second game; if there is a third game, the teams change ends both at the
start of the game, and when the leading players score reaches 11
o You cannot block a serve
o Court dimensions:

Engagement:
o Ask the students:
o Have you ever played badminton before?
o What rules do you remember?
Name: Elizabeth White Grade Level: High School Subject Area: Physical Education
o What score do you play to?
o Where/how do you serve a birdie/shuttle?
o What would you like to learn?
o Hook/Warm Up Activity:
o Divide students into teams of two, and allow them to practice hitting the shuttle back and forth to get a feel for the
way the racket feels and the way the shuttle flies.
o While students are practicing, assess from their knowledge from the previous questions and assess their skill while
hitting to each other to gage where the students level is currently.
o Allow students to practice the skills that will be assessed. Such as serving, forehand stroke, and backhand stroke.

Exploration:
o 1. Dress Out/Roll Call (5 minutes)
o Make any last minute preparations while students are dressing out
o Determine which students are present/dressed out, how many students will be participating in the activity
o 2. Engagement Activity (5 minutes)
o Ask questions and allow students to practice hitting back and forth to assess where the students badminton levels
are.
o 3. Demonstration/Lecture (10 minutes)
o Review badminton terminology
Review equipment and proper names
Shuttlecock/birdie, racket, net
Review/demonstrate basic strokes
Underhand vs. overhand
Forehand vs. backhand
Smash
o Explain Basic Rules
Explain faults
Ask what is an example of a fault?
Give examples (under background information)
Demonstrate examples of faults
Review scoring
First to 21 points
Must win by 2
If match goes to 30, then 30-29 is a winning score
Explain that a set is best 2 of 3 matches
o Ask for three volunteers
o Review serving/playing
Ask: who serves the shuttle/where is the shuttle served?
Demonstrate serving into correct area of the court with the correct form (underhand, below waist,
diagonally)
When a fault occurs, demonstrate that the opposing team receives the shuttle
Remind students that when a team serves that if the teams score is even, the player on the right side serves,
and when the score is odd the left side serves
Remind students of boundary lines, such as the short service line and service areas (right and left sides)

Brackets will be kept by me
If we do not finish, well pick up where we left off next time

o 4. Tournament (20 minutes)

o Students will engage in a doubles tournament
Name: Elizabeth White Grade Level: High School Subject Area: Physical Education
o At the start of the tournament 8 teams will play, the 4 winning teams will go on to play each other, and then the final
2 teams will play each other after that in a championship game
o Teams that lose will free-play other losing teams
o I will walk around to assess, answer questions, keep the bracket score, and correct form/rule violations
o 5. Closure (2-3 minutes)

o Mention the things we worked on today (serving, hitting, rallies, playing full court badminton).
o Encourage the students that they have been doing well on all the skills as they practiced and implemented today.
o Explain that next time I am in class we can finish up the tournament to find out whom the winning team is!
