Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
1. Students will be able to draw inferences from the text.
2. Students will be able to determine central themes and ideas of a text. Students will be able to analyze the development of
these themes and ideas through the course of the text.
3. Students will be able to use textual evidence to support an analysis of the text.
Unit Summary:
In this unit students will read Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice over the course of four weeks. Each day the students
will engage in in-class discussion about the text. We will discuss explicit themes and ideas present within the text as
well as make inferences based on textual evidence. At the beginning of each class students will take a quiz covering
the major plot events in that days reading. At the end of each class students the teacher will present a topic or
question and the students will write journal entries responding to the topic or question. At the end of each chapter the
class will engage in a collaborative activity discussing themes and ideas within that chapter. Near the end of the unit
each student will create a graphic organizer. They will also complete a group webercise. At the end of the unit each
student will write an analytical and argumentative essay about a certain theme or idea within the text; while
incorporating textual evidence.
