Materials Needed:

Colored pencils
Printed out tables with fractional parts

Goals: 5.NF.B.4 The student will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to
multiply a fraction by a whole number or a fraction by a fraction.

Objectives:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of fractional parts.
The student will demonstrate multiply fractions using templates.
The student will multiply whole numbers and fractions.
The student will understand how to multiply two fractions.

Instructional Procedures:

1. Revisit fractions through modeling including necessary terms


2. Model multiplying, simplifying, and converting mixed numbers into improper
fractions
3. I do, We do, You do using teacher created real world fractional problems
4. In groups of two, students will be given materials listed above to demonstrate
multiplying fractions by color coding fractional parts. Students will be given a

fractional table that corresponds to each fraction in the problem. Ex: 5
