LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Megan Smidt

Grade Level: 9-12
School: Central High School
Date: April 26, 2017
Time: 1:55

Reflection from prior lesson:

This lesson went better than my first. During this lesson, the students were more involved
because they had to tell me which picture they like better. They were able to choose a
picture and they described in detail why they liked it, so they met the objective. They also
answered when I asked them a question. This lesson made me feel better because the
students were more involved. I did not do all of the talking. I think the students
understood this lesson and it was more about opinion instead of something that is right or
wrong. As long as they provided a reason for why they chose the picture they met the
objective.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

9-12 Visual Arts Standards

1. Students will understand and use visual arts as a means for creative self-
expression and interpersonal communications.

WHST.9-10.6
Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or
shared writing products, taking advantage of technology's capacity to link to other
information and to display information flexibly and dynamically.

Lesson Objectives:

After the lesson, students will be able to use Power Point to create a childrens story out
of pictures they have taken with 80% accuracy.

Materials Needed:

Pictures
Power Point
Smart Board

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

In this classroom, there are four students enrolled, but due to different factors, like
Special Olympics we have an average of three students in the class. The classroom is a
special education classroom. There is a wide range of skill and developmental levels.
Each student has their own Individualized Education Program. Since this is a
photography class, the students have access to cameras and computers from a mobile lab.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

getting attention:

Last week we went out and took pictures! Today we are going to use those
pictures to make something!
relating to past experience and/or knowledge:

Do you remember looking at childrens story? What stood out to you? Was it the
words or the pictures?

creating a need to know:

Our pictures should tell a story, so today we are telling a story. Sometimes our
pictures should tell a story without words, but today we will use words and
pictures.

sharing objective, in general terms:

Today we will use Power Point and the pictures we took last week to make a
childrens story!

2. Content Delivery (15 minutes, Direct Instruction)

Alright, everyone go ahead and get out your computer. When you have it ready
open Power Point. Raise your hand if you need help.

I am going to show you how to start your story.

Right away, I want you to select a blank presentation because we are going to be
using pictures for our background.

I want you to leave the first slide blank, unless you know what you want the title
of your story to be. If you do, you can put the title and on the second line put your
name.
Now at the top of the screen we are going to click on New Slide. Because we
want to add a slide.

Up on the toolbar find Design and click it. Under Design we want to find
Format Background.

Then we will click on Picture or Texture Fill.

Do you see where it says, Insert Picture From and then has File?
Go ahead and click on File. Now we have to find our picture and select it.

It should be our background. If it is blurry or needs to be changed, I can help you

with that.

What else do we need to do on this slide? We need to add words. What could we
say about this picture? I think we could say The girl is happy!

If I was writing a book with this picture, I might try to take a picture of a sad
girl. I would be making a book about emotions or how we feel.

Make sure when you type your words, the color is readable. If not, we need to
change the font color. If you need help with this, go back to the Home tab and
click on Font Color. I will walk around to make sure you are understanding!

Your story needs to be at least 5 slides. It has to make sense and it has to have
words!

3. Closure (5 minutes)

Today we worked on creating our childrens book out of your pictures. Have you
decided what you want your story to talk about? What else might you want to add
to your story? Is there anything you want to do differently than I did? Look at the
pictures you have and think about what story those pictures could tell!

B. Assessments Used

Informal: Students are able to create a childrens story out of their pictures on Power
Point.

C. Differentiated Instruction

I will expect the students who are at a higher level to write more in their stories. The
students who are at a lower level will not be expected to write as much.
