Course Description: Backstage organization and basic scenery production methods.

Lectures and mandatory participation in construction and running crews of department productions.
Reading Requirements: Theatrical Design and Production, by J. Michael Gillette 7th Edition
Other Requirements: You must attend ECU Playhouse productions. You must purchase an Architect Scale Rule.

Safety: Do not wear baggy clothes or open toed shoes to lab, you will be asked to leave and be counted ABSENT from crew.
While working in the scene shop you MUST wear eye protection. If you have long hair, pull it back or tuck it under a hat.
Attendance: You get FIVE absences, ABSENCE NUMBER SIX IS AUTOMATIC F. After you have reached your limit,
there will be no excuses, it will not matter if it is a funeral, court case, or illness. Dont use them and be sorry later. Attendance
is taken each class and I keep the record in my office if you want to know your standing, come by and see me.
Lateness: To quote John Shearin, If youre on time, youre late! We will start class and crew on time.
Crew: Part of this class is crew, crew is mandatory; if you fail crew you will fail the class. Crew is approximately 80 hours
of work, when you arrive to your crew call be ready to work. Every student will work on both crews, 40 hours of scenery crew,
and 40 hours of paint crew; or work on the running crew for a show. While you are on scenery crew you must attend strike for
4 hours. Strike runs from 1:00pm to 5:00 pm, dinner break 5:00pm to 6:30pm, and then 6:30pm till 11:00pm. If you are cast
in a show, you are still expected to complete your crew assignment, I will work with your schedule so you get the hours you
need and not miss any rehearsals. Running crew is approximately two full weeks of commitment, every night usually from
6:00 pm till 12:00am (apprx. 78 hours). First running crew meeting is usually Tuesday or Wednesday a week and a half before
the show opens. If you are working scenery crew on the current show, it is required that you attend strike for that show.
FALL SEMESTER MAINSTAGE CREW ASSIGNMENTS TAKE PRIORITY OVER ALL WORKSHOPS AND
OTHER THEATRE AND DANCE PROJECTS. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORM DIRECTORS OR
CHOREOGRAPHERS OF YOUR CREW COMMITMENT, YOU WILL NOT BE EXCUSED FROM ANY CREW TO
REHEARSE OR PERFORM, UNLESS IT IS A MAINSTAGE PRODUCTION.

Section 001: Las Meninas, Strike is on Oct. 8th, 1pm-11pm (dinner break 5-6:30).
Section 002: Rent, Strike is on Nov. 30th, 1pm -11pm (dinner break 5-6:30).
Crew Grade: Is based off attendance and attitude, you get 3 points for every hour that you attend and up to 2 pts per hour for
attitude. Hours can only be made up if you give notice to the faculty crew head 24 hours in advance. Sometimes under
SEVERE and STRICT circumstances you maybe allowed to make up hours but that is the Faculty Crew Heads decision. If
you have a really bad attitude toward your crew or the other students in crew you will be asked to leave crew and you will not
be allowed to make up the hours.
Test # 1: Covers all material in Chapters 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10

Test #2: Covers all material in Chapters 7, 11, and the rest of Chapter 10

Final Exam: Covers all material from Test #1 and Test #2

classroom. On Fridays, the class will be meeting in the scene shop.
