Project Part 3

I dont believe there is going to be any correlation between the number of candies per bag and

the height of the individual that purchased that bag.

Can height be used to predict the number of candies that will be in a bag of skittles you

purchase? I believe the explanatory variable is the height of the person purchasing the bag of

candies and the response variable is the number of candies per bag. The question asks us if

height can be a predictor of the number of candies, and a response variable is the particular

quantity that we ask a question about in our study. An explanatory variable is any factor that can

influence the response variable, we want to know if the height will influence the number of

candies.
R (correlation coefficient) = 0.1664822

Critical Value=0.361

Is this what you expected when you thought about what the results would be before

analyzing the data? Explain.

*In a way this is what I thought the outcome would be because just like I predicted there is not

much of a correlation everything's completely random and does not connect therefore this is

what I was expecting.

Is there a significant relationship between the two variables?

*No there is not a significant relationship between two variables. The linear correlation

coefficient lies in between the two tails of the critical values, therefore there is no significant

evidence to support the claim

Using the regression equation to calculate how many candies would be in a bag when

purchased by someone that is 63.5 inches tall.

Regression Equation: Y =0.099543812x+53.125663

Y =0.099543812 (63.5) +53.125663= 59.446695062

Was it appropriate to use this regression equation to make this prediction? Why or why

not?

*This equation is not appropriate to make predictions about the number of candies per bag. The

requirements for using the regression equation is that the points approximately make a straight
line, as you can see in the graph there is no straight line. Using the regression equation as a

predicted is not appropriate because there is no specific correlation between the two variables.

R2 and interpret its meaning

R^2 = 0.02771632291

R^2 is a statistical measure of how close the data are to the fitted regression line. The higher the

R-squared, the better the model fits your data.

Would it be appropriate to predict the number of candies in a bag purchased by retired

Houston Rockets player Yao Ming, who is 90 inches tall? Why or why not?

*If there were a correlation between the height of an individual and the number of candies per

bag it would still not be appropriate to use retired Houston Rockets player Yao Ming, who

measures 90 inches tall. Yao Ming would be considered an outlier, and outliers can have a strong

effect on the regression equation. Yao Ming would have to be removed in order to get a more

accurate result.

Enter these values into your calculator and report the correlation coefficient and regression

equation. Give the appropriate critical value and state whether or not there is a significant

linear relationship between X and Y for this smaller data set.

-Correlation Coefficient =0.9933995792

-Regression Equation= 1.03819723x+1.594670838

-Critical Value= 0.433

Not there is not a linear relationship , r is close to 0. A value near zero means that there is a

random, nonlinear relationship between the two variables.
