What are IITs? campus life, diverse curriculum and a plethora of

T he Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

are the premier institutions for engineering
education in India. They are autonomous institutions,
opportunities, the IITs are a dream destination for
students all across India.

i.e., they exercise independent control over their day to
day operations and curriculum. Apart from bachelors,
masters and doctorate degrees in engineering, IITs offer
programs for Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture,
Management, etc.
As of today, there are sixteen IITs all over the
country with five more new ones in the pipeline. Five
of the oldest and best IITs are located at Kharagpur,
Kanpur, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai with Kharagpur
being the oldest. Subsequently IITs were established at
Guwahati in 94, Roorkee in 01 and at Gandhinagar,
Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Bhubaneshwar, Mandi,
Patna, Ropar and Varanasi in the last six years.
The Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad is in the
process of being converted into an IIT. The Government
of India, in its budget of July 2014, announced setting
up of 5 new IITs in Jammu and Kashmir,Chhattisgarh,
Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The IIT that is closest
What are NITs?
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs), earlier
known as the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs),
were founded to include the aspect of regional diversity
and multi-cultural understanding in technical education
in the country. There are 30 NITs in India, one in each
state. Like the IITs, they are autonomous institutions
offering bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in the
different branches of engineering. Degrees like MBA,
MCA, MSc, etc. in various subjects are also offered.
On the same lines as IITs, NITs have a vibrant
campus life with students, research scholars and faculty
residing inside the campus itself. There are a multitude
of clubs, societies, etc. run by students working towards
the betterment of quality of technical education at
IITs and NITs. The students have a lot of say in the
administration of these institutes.
The best of the NITs have often been ranked above

 What are Institutes of National Importance?
The status of Institution of National
Importance (INI) is bestowed by the
Govt. of India upon higher education
institutions which serve as pivotal
players in developing highly skilled
personnel within the specified region of
the country/state. INIs receive special
recognition and funding.
As on 7th October, 2014, there are 41
INIs all over the country including all
existing IITs and few NITs. NITK
Surathkal has been conferred the status
of an INI. Recently, National Institute of Design (NID),
Ahmedabad was awarded the status of INI.
How to get to IITs and NITs?
IITs and NITs take admissions based on the performance
of a candidate in the Joint Entrance
Exam (JEE) conducted in April.
The exam is split into two parts.
The JEE Main is the first stage
conducted both online as well as
on paper. JEE Main Rank List is
prepared by giving 60% weightage
to JEE scores and 40% weightage
to Class 12 board marks. This score
is considered for admission to the
NITs and IIITs (Indian Institutes of
Information Technology).Separate
rank lists are drawn for various categories. Overall, the
top 1,50,000candidates in the JEE Main (from all merit
lists) will be eligible to sit for the JEE Advanced. IITs
take admissions based on a candidates performance
in the JEE Advanced. A new rule recommends that the
student should be in top 20 percentile or secure 75%
marks in the board examinations, whichever is lower,
for a seat in the IITs.
For JEE 2014, a total of 9,784 seats were made available
to students across all branches and across all IITs. Those
who do not make it through to IITs are nevertheless
considered for admission to the NITs and IIITs.
Those who make it to the list of Top 1,50,000 rank holders
in JEE Main 2014 merit list can sit for JEE Advanced
2014 and again in JEE Advanced 2015 to get a seat in
their coveted course or institute.
Certain other institutes which uses JEE advanced rank for
admission are IISc Bangalore, IIST Thiruvananthapuram,
RGPIT Rae Bareli and IISERs at Bhopal, Mohali,
Kolkata,Puneand Thiruvananthapuram.
A notable point here is that NITs reserve 50% of their seats
for students of the home state. This means that those who
give their board/PU exam from a school or PU college
in Karnataka are eligible for the 50% reserved seats at
NITK, Surathkal. This should be an added motivation for
students belonging to Karnataka as NITK is one of the
top engineering colleges of the country.

 What is the reservation scheme for
higher educational institutions?
JEE
After the results of the JEE Main are declared, the
top 1,50,000 candidates (from all merit lists) will be
eligible to sit for the JEE Advanced. These top 1,
50,000 candidates will include:
50.5% or about 75,750 candidates from the Common
Merit List (CML). If reserved category candidates are
included in this list, they will not be included in their
respective category lists.
1. 27% or about 40,500 candidates from the OBC-NCL
Merit List.
2.15% or about 22,500 candidates from the SC Merit
List.
3.7.5% or about 11,250 candidates from the ST Merit
List.
4.Persons with Disability (PwD) from each category
will be allotted 3% seats from that category.
The JEE Mains result will comprise of score obtained by
the students and status of qualification for JEE Advanced
exam based on above mentioned distribution.
In NITs, 50% of the seat are reserved for home state
students.
Separately, on the basis of score in JEE (Main) and
normalised score in Class 12th or equivalent qualifying
exam (60% & 40% weightage respectively), separate
rank lists will be prepared for admission to B.E./B.
Tech. and B. Arch/ B. Planning.
In JEE Advanced 2014, 9784 seats were available. The
category wise reservation of seats here was of same
percentage as
mentioned above in JEE mains. Apart from this students
have to be in top 20
percentile in their respective board in the qualifying
exam to get finally admitted into IITs and ISMs.
CET
The number of reserved seats in colleges which take
admission through CET varies from one another. After
getting rank in CET, you have to take part in counseling
procedure and college will be allotted according to seat
availability in different quotas. In general these are
categories to avail reservation:
1.Reservation of seats in favor of special category
candidate like N. C. C. special category, sports special
category, scouts & guides special category, defence
special category, physically disability special category,
ex-defence Special category etc.
2. Reservation for reserved category students (ST, SC
&OBC).
3. 5% of the Government seats will be reserved
horizontally in favor of the Kannada medium candidates
who have studied full academic years in Kannada
medium from 1st Standard to 10th Standard.
4. 15% of the Government seats will be reserved
horizontally in favor of rural candidate.
5. Seats are also reserved for migrants of J&K and
Hyderabad-Karnataka region

If I have taken up the science stream in
PU/Std. XI & XII, is engineering the only option for me?
Absolutely not. There is a
world of streams that is available
out there. We have limited
ourselves to a few because of the
culture of following the crowd.
A person can have a variety
of interests that are maybe
not entertained by our school
education system today.
For example, someone who
is good at the computer can
take up a Bachelor in Computer
Applications (BCA) instead
of taking up a more grilling
Computer Engineering. For those who see themselves
as future leaders, a degree called Bachelor in Business
Administration (BBA) is available at several colleges.
Similarly, there are a wide variety of career options that
havent been explored or encouraged by our current
school education system like sports, music, journalism,
mass-communication, arts, literature and many many
more.
It is here that the role of the internet comes into
play. I can go on and on and on telling you about the
plethora of career options available to you. But I think
that such things are best left to the students themselves.
So I encourage you to surf the internet and find out your
area of interest if you already havent done so. You can
also consult your teachers, parents and seniors regarding
this.
Something that has to be stated here is the difference
between interest and passion. For you to pursue one of
your
interests as a career today, it is very important that
it goes on to become your passiontomorrow. Because
you will be taking it up as a job later and you will be
living off it. So it is you who has to evaluate whether a
particular career choice suits you or not.

There is nothing like priority of preparation. Make your fundamentals strong by understanding the concepts of topics.
Reffer good books, especially competative exams books, not just board related books. If your concepts on any topic
clear, then any exams are going to be easy.

2. Day by day, Iam scaring about my JEE mains? Me studing in Second PUC science. what
should I do? I want to get in to NITK. - Prajna, St.Aloysious, Mangalore
No point in scaring about any exams. Belive yourself. Self motivation should be required at this movement. As per
indian techniques, do daily prayer two times, morning and evning aobut 20 min.Chant any sloka or mantra repeatedly
and heratly pray and wish god for your success. Mean while, be sytematic and focus on study. keep recal all formula
and definiton once before you goig to bed. success is yours.

3. Which branch of engineering can be called the branch of this era? -Apeksha, SDM PUC
We suggest you not to select your branch in this manner.You should first see which branch suits you the most.That
branch can even even be metallurgy,which is never given priority over circuit branches by a lot of people just because
they like to follow the crowd.But trust us,if it is the branch that makes you comfortable,you are definitely going to
make it the branch of this era.

I had a chance to be a doctor from the prestigious
university as I got 44th Rank in CET (Med) but
my passion pulled me to be a engineer from the best
university of Karnataka, NITK. In 2007, I was selected
in extended merit list in JEE but got a state rank of
185 in AIEEE and chose Electrical and Electronics
Engineering (EEE) in NITK although I performed
well with 18th Rank CET and 15th in COMED-K. I
got a chance to learn from top engineers under the roof
of MATRIX CLASSES. The approach of teachers
at MATRIX to solve physics and mathematics
problems ignited my spirit to work smartly. Joining
MATRIX became the turning point in my life, as
being from rural background where I did my PU
education at Pompei College, Kinnigoli which is
15km away from Surathkal city. When I was in first
year PUC, Gururaj sir visited and inspired us about
the various competitive exams like JEE and AIEEE.
It paved my way to get my Bachelors in EEE at NITK
I gave JEE Mains, WBJEE, JEE Advanced and
BITSAT. My rank in JEE Mains was 568,
WBJEE was 532, JEE advanced couldnt qualify
and BITSAT got a score of 268/360. I went for only
JEE Mains counseling, since my priority was IITs,
BITSPilani, NITK and then state government college
with computer science. I was quite rigid about my
branch. Hence I didnt go for BITS counseling since
I might have got B-Pharma there. I preferred NITK
than NITT (Trichy) because I knew; I would get a
