Industrial
Visit Report
Mechanical
A & B Sec II Semester
We started planning to go for an industrial visit as soon as we
heard from our staff advisor that we were allowed to go for an Industrial Visit. We asked
various companies from Coimbatore for the Industrial Visit. But those companies are
processing companies. So we neglected those and planned for a company that would be
understandable by all the students. At this time our staff advisor Mr.N.Vasanthanathan sir
gave us the idea about this dairy company K.C Milks and Dairy Products, Vathalagundu. We
surfed the net about this company and later we came to know that the owner of this company
was our staff advisors class mate.
Then we sent a mail to the company about our visit to their
company and got their permission. After getting the permission the asked the confirmation
from the principal. We requested principal to give permission for our industrial visit. He
accepted our request and we got the permission letter from our Principal. So we attached the
companys mail with principals letter and scanned it and sent it as a mail to the company and
confirmed our visit. Then we finished our side of work like arranging vehicle for travel and
other preliminary works.
On 03.03.2016, we started our travel from Kauveri Hostel. We
were accompanied by four of our staff advisors:

1. Mr. A.Vasanthanathan

2. Mr.Rajesh Jesudoss Hynes

3. Mr.S.Chidambara Kumaran

4. Mr.G.Manoj Kumar

We picked up some students on the way. We started our travel

at 7:00 AM and we reached HARISH HOTEL, Tirumangalam at 8:30 AM. We had a
delicious breakfast at the Hotel. Though some students felt the cost was very high, they had
their satisfied breakfast. Then we continued our journey to the company. We reached the
company around 10:30 AM. There they welcomed us with their warm smile and they asked
us to get separated into twenty five per team. Each team was led by the respective staffs of
that company. We were given with special caps as a precaution for the company.
About the Company:
KC Milk, The Dairy was established by the founder Shree
K.CHELLAMUTHU before 25 years. He initiated the firm by acquired of the raw milk
around the villages of the Dindigul District. He commenced his profession through a
diminutive workforces. Then it is now managed by Shree C. Suresh Kumar B.E., Managing
Director of KC Milk Dairy since 2001. Basically, He is an Engineering graduate. The
Company has been exploiting the potential of Hygienic and High Quality milk to the society
since 1975.

What we learned:
The factory is concerned in packing of milk based on its fat
content and other dairy products which includes curd. Initially we happened to see the place
where raw milk is delivered by milk delivers. The milk collected from the domestic producers
is received at RMRD (Raw Milk Receiving Department). There the milk from various
producers is checked for adulteration and then mixed together followed by filtration to
remove the suspended dust or impurity.
Then it is forwarded to cooling process, where it is kept at
5C for further processing. Then the milk is treated at fat separator to remove the fat
molecules form the milk. Until this milk is common for all the process. Then depending upon
the commercial demand the milk is obtained from the fat separator i.e. skimmed milk is
separated into three parts:

1. Standardised milk (3.0 SNF)

2. Toned milk (4.5 SNF)
3. Full Cream milk(6.0 SNF)

The fat obtained from the fat separation process is used in

calculated amount to make three types of milk. If needed in excess Skimmed Milk Powder
(SMP) is also added. For making curd and butter milk, toned milk is used. Curd and butter
milk are made by fermenting with specific bacteria for good and efficient yield. After fat
separation, the milk is pasteurised at 85C for 12 seconds by passing it in a steel pipe through
pre-heated steel plates and the design is made accordingly. After each of these process a
sample of milk is taken into the laboratory for testing its adulteration. If the sample was
found to be defective it will be corrected using the additives. The milk was stored in 7 large
containers called Xylose. The processing and the machines inner parts dealt with mechanical
concepts. We felt that these will be of sure use in our future studies.

In the packing section, we came across the packing machines which were new to us.
The Pasteurized, Standardised & Homogenized milk is then packaged by high speed
Automatic Filling Machines to various volumes like 1000 ml, 500 ml, 250 ml & 200 ml.The
packaging material shall be made from virgin polyethylene (LDPE - Low Density
Polyethylene, LLDPE-Linear Low Density Polyethylene or a blend thereof) film meeting the
food grade requirements
(Copolymers of Ethylene having density not more than 0.928 g/ml 27C)

To conserve the temperature of the milk, the packaged pouches are stored in Puffed
Refrigeration storage. The Process & Packaging are done under hygienic conditions as per
the Standards of Food Safety Management & Indian Standards.

The machines we saw there were difficult to understand. But

the staffs of the company came with us to make these difficulties clear. The laboratories were
filled with safety precaution, they even made us to leave our shoes behind.
After the visit inside the company, the asked us to sit in the
resting hall and asked us to question them about what we saw in that company. Students
asked their doubts and they were cleared of their doubts.
They also had a very good water treatment system. They call
it effluent treatment system. The Effluent Treatment Plant is used to conservative the
environment. To purify water and remove any toxic and non-toxic materials or chemicals
from the waste and cleaning water. During the manufacturing process, varied effluents and
contaminants are produced. The effluent treatment plant removes high amount of
organics, dirt, grit, pollution, toxic, non-toxic materials, chemicals etc.
The Cleaned Effluent water is then transferred to Secondary
Aeration Tank for defuse. The Bio Chemicals like DAP, Urea & Potash, Cow dung etc., will
added for develop the bacteria, which helps to degrade the effluent waste. After this process,
the water is transferred to Secondary Settling Tank. Finally the Treated water is stored in a
final collection sump and used for Agricultural Land.

Queries:
The packing was made from plastic, does this affect the purity of milk?
How many days the milk packet will stay unaffected?
What should we check before buying the milk?
How many districts are you delivering the milk packets?
Do you have your branches outside Tamilnadu?
Does mechanical engineer play a role in these type of companies?
After clearing our doubts, we assembled before the company
as a whole and we presented the company with a memento that we have bought with a sticker
mentioning the college name. Then we left the company with an extraordinary send off from
the staffs of the company. The informed us they were happy with our visit to their company.
Then we reached saravana bhavan on the highways for our
lunch. Since we have informed the hotel about our arrival of 125 students, they have prepared
enough food for us. We really astonished to have such a meal from them. Everyone enjoyed
the lunch. We paid the bill from the money weve collected from the students.
Then we started our return journey. Weve entered Madurai
city along the way and reached the same Harish Hotel on the way for snacks. We had our
snacks and continued our journey. The students belonging to Virudhunagar were dropped
along the highways. Then we reached the hostel around 7:00 PM.
Now we are sure that weve learned about the milk and dairy
processing companies. Such knowledge can only be gained by these industrial visits. I claim
it is a useful and effective utilisation made on the day.

WE PERSONALLY THANK OUR BELOVED HOD (MECH DEPT) AND OUR

PRINCIPAL FOR ALLOWING US TO HAVE THIS INDUTRIAL VISIT.

Money details:
Bus expenses: 13,000*2 = 26,000
Lunch Bill : 8,500

Feedback from the students:

We thank our Principal, HOD and Staff advisors for
permitting us to go on an industrial visit for enhancing our knowledge to greater heights. But
the distance of travelling can be made further. The companies based on research works can be
made for visiting. The doubt clarification was done well for us. When we left the company
we have all our doubts cleared and we were confident that we have learnt something from
that company and utilised the day properly. The bus arrangement and cost of the expenses
were very cheap. The pre-information and details about the Industrial visit was given to us. It
was very much helpful to prepare money for the expenses.
