Developmental Goals:
The goal of this activity is for children to learn the qualities of
a good friend.

Learning Objectives:
Children will learn the importance of positive traits in a friend.

Materials Needed:
Table, colored paper, markers, safety scissors, tape

Motivation/Introduction:
Were going to read a new book about having friends. Do you
all have friends? All of you guys are my friends so I want to
read you this book because its one of my favorite books. After
we read this book, were going to do a very fun activity that
includes some sharp scissors so we all have to make sure we
have our listening ears on, ok?
Procedures:
Step 1: Explain to the children what we will be doing. For example,
Were going to read a new book about having friends. All of you guys
are my friends so I want to read you this book because its one of my
favorite books. After we read this book, were going to do a very fun
activity that includes some sharp scissors so we all have to make sure we
have our listening ears on, ok?
Step 2: Read The Rainbow Fish
Step 3: When done reading, ask the children what they thought. For
example, Did you guys enjoy that book? Do you think the Rainbow fish

was being a good friend? Would you want to be his friend? What do you
think a good friend is?
Step 4: Direct them to a table
Step 5: Remind them since youre going to be using scissors they have to
make sure theyre listening for directions.
Step 6: Pass out small pieces of colored construction paper
Step 7: Pass out safety scissors and explain to them they need to try to
cut on the lines
Step 8: Place the marker bin on the table
Step 9: Explain to them that when they are done to ask for help from a
teacher to write what they think a friend is
Step 10: When they are all done, have them clean up scraps of paper
Step 11: Have them take turns taking pieces of tape and sticking them to
the back of their scales
(Make sure to already have the fishs head, tail, and fins already cut out
and taped to the wall or wherever you want to put it. This will eliminate
chaos and let you focus your attention on the kids as they do this
activity)
Step 12: Tape all the scales up to the fish and read them out loud
Modeling/Guided Practice: (show, follow me)?
After explaining each step, help children when needed, show them how
to use scissors properly if needed
Checking for Understanding (specific questions you will ask)?
Do we all have our listening ears on? What do we do first? How do we
hold scissors? Do we cut things other than paper with them? What do we
do if we need help?

Independent Work
Cutting the paper, writing what they want in a friend
(with help)

Closure/Transition:
Do this activity just before snack time. After they are done,
have the children take turns washing the marker off their
hands so they can be clean and ready to eat!
