Time Says It All1
Many students complain about going to school all the time. They say, it's stupid, they
dont like it and that its a waste of time. That's why timing says it all. The meaning of this is, if
schools everywhere started school time later, this would fix the problem. American high school
should start later to improve tardiness and create focused, healthy, cooperative students. The later
school starts, the more rested, more awake/ focused and less tardy students would be.2 They
would enjoy being at school more and they wouldn't complain as much.
Firstly, tardiness is a big problem around American schools today. If schools were to start
later, tardiness wouldn't be as much of a problem.3 Most students don't want to get up early in the
morning, so they chose to sleep in and come to school late almost everyday. In the article 'Later
start time for teens improves grades, mood, and safety', that studies show significant decreases in
absences and tardiness as well as greater academic benefits for schools with the latest school
start time. (Wahlstrom 1) This is proving that schools that do start later in the morning, have less
tardiness and all around more focused students that care about going to school. Tardiness also
has an effect on students academic's. If we were to come to school by 9 every morning, students

would have an opportunity to do homework in the morning, if they didn't have time to at night.
Students could overall make sure to be caught up on what they were doing if we didn't have to go
to school so early. More students wouldn't rush to school if it started later. In the article 'Later
start time for teens improves grades, mood and safety', that later school starts the less car crashes
there is. The number of crashes in a districts study showed a decrease in 13% of car crashes
when school started at a later time.4 (Wahlstrom 1) This means if students were to wake up late,
they wouldn't have to rush to get to school. The later school would start, the less car crashes that
Secondly, schools districts say that schools shouldn't start later because it will cost more
to transport the students back and forth by using the buses. In 'Do Schools Begin Too Early',
states that schools shouldnt start at a later time due to the costs. The later schools start the more
money they will have to pay the bus drivers. It's cheaper to have the school start early because
they use fewer buses than what they would have to if they all started later.5 It's stated that the
reason why schools have different starting times is due to having to use less transportation,
which is cheaper than having all the schools start at the same time because they aren't using all
the buses at once now. With this being said, it would be easier for schools to all start at the same
time. This would give the chance for students to be more awake and more focused, rather than

nonetheless.

Thirdly, schools starting later will have more focused, healthy, and cooperative students.
Students would be more rested for the day and would be more willing to actually do work
instead of just letting it go and not caring about it as much because they are so tired to care about
anything. In the article 'Do Schools Begin Too Early?' it states that students with below-average
test scores, suggest that start schools at a later time would narrow tat gap in students achieving
below-average scores of things. (Edwards) This overall means that schools that start later have
seen results in tests taken by their students. It gives that students more time to rest so they are
more rested and healthy to take these tests and would be more likely to get a better grade on it
because they would be more rested. The more sleep you get at night, the better off the students
are for the next day of school. In the article 'Health and activities outcomes' it states those with
school times starting later it decreases the use of cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana usage by 8%
to 14% when teens get those eight or more hours of sleep at night. (Wahlstrom 3) This means
that the more students sleep at night the less you'll be tired in the morning and the more focused
you'll be for the next day. This also is proving the more sleep the students get, the less restless
and stressed you'll be which will decreased the usage in drugs people use. The meaning of this is
will everyone's life healthier because they wouldn't being doing drugs and would be getting that
Lastly, some school districts feel that whether schools start later or not students still won't
be motivated to do anything. If the students dont like school period, starting school at a later
time, still won't change their minds about liking it or not. If they dont like it, then they still
wouldnt like it. Students tend to not care about their grades and have a hard time focusing
whether it's early in the morning or later in the day. They feel that going early would help benefit
the students because they'd be getting it done and over with in the morning and then you'd have

the rest of the day to yourself to enjoy and do whatever. However, don't really agree with it at all.
The more rest and the later time schools start will increase the chances of the students actually
caring and wanting to do good in school. Starting school at a later time would give them the
opportunity to sleep in, as to what many high schools teenagers would love to do, and then go to
In conclusion, I believe that schools should all start at a later time. American high school
should start later to improve tardiness and create more focused, healthy, cooperative students. I
feel this way because I believe that it will make more students focused, and less studetns would
be tardy and would try more often. More students would be willing to actually want to learn if
they had a good sleep the night before and would be able to do better on tests. Most students
could care less about school but I think if they had the opportunity to come at a later time, they
would start to enjoy coming to school more because they'd still be able to sleep in and have time
to themselves outside of school. Many people many not agree with this because they think to just
go early and get out early, but getting a good night rest is very important, especially for high
