ThegoalandobjectiveofthePoetryUnitwastoteachandaddressthe3 rdgradeliteracy

standards.IntheReading,WritingandCommunicatingCommonCoreStateStandards,Standard

2.1aivandStandard2.1biiareaddressed.

Whenitcomestoliteracy,afewoftheReading:LiteratureCommonCoreStandardsare

addressed.Forexample,StandardRL.3.1,RL.3.2,RL.3.4andRL.3.5areapplicabletothisUnit.

RL.3.1Askandanswerquestionstodemonstrateunderstandingofatext,referringexplicitlyto

thetextasthebasisfortheanswers.

Literacy,numeracyandtechnologyaddressedintheUnit

Asstatedpreviously,theliteracystandardswereaddressedinthisUnit.Inregardsto

numeracy,studentsalsohadtobeabletocount.Theyneededtocountlinesofpoetry,aswellas

syllablesineachline.TechnologywasalsousedthroughouttheUnit.Thedocumentcamera,as

wellastheprometheanboardwereusedtomodel,analyzeanddisplaypoems.

Objectivesaddresshigherorderthinkingskills

Again,thegoalandobjectiveofthePoetryUnitwastoaddressthe3 rd gradeliteracy

standards.Allofthestandardspreviouslylistedhelpedstudentsunderstandpoetry.Theyhadto

tap into their higher order thinking skills by asking questions, collaborating with peers,

rememberingtherulesofeachpoemandthenapplytheknowledgetheylearnedbycreatingtheir

own poem. Benjamin Bloom created Blooms Taxonomy which was a visual triangle that

manifestedhigherorderthinkingskills.InBloomsTaxonomy,hestatesthatstudentscreate,

evaluate,analyze,apply,understandandremember.InthisPoetryUnit,allofthese6stepsare

hit.Studentscreatednewandoriginalpoems,theyevaluatedtheirpoemsandgavereasonsfor

whytheymadethepoemtheydid,theythenanalyzedthepoembycomparingthepoemtothe

poemIpresentedtothem,theyappliedtheirknowledgeabouteachpoembycreatingtheirown

poem,theythenunderstoodthattheirpoemhadtofollowasetofrules.Lastly,studentswere
askedatthebeginningofeachlessontorecallthepreviouspoemtheystudied,sotheyapplied

Bloomsrememberstage,aswell.

Objectivesallowstudentsvariousmeanstodemonstrateproficiency

The goal and objective was demonstrated when students created their own poems. I

understoodiftheywereproficientornotbycirculatingtheclassroomandmakingsureeach

studentfollowedtherulesofeachpoem.Studentsshowcasedtheirproficiencybymeetingsome

of/allofthe3rdgradeliteracystandards.
