Year 6-7 Induction Work

Introduction For Parents

The Science Induction Workbook contains a number of activities to help introduce students to
Science in secondary schools, specifically focusing on the way we teach at Townley. The aim
of the work is to encourage students to develop their experimental skills by considering safety in
the laboratory, investigative procedures and terminology, and the appropriate use of support
resources. At the same time, we hope that we can acquire information about the students prior
experiences in order for us to adapt our teaching to their specific needs and set appropriate
targets.

The minimum expectation is that all students complete the following tasks to the best of
their ability:
p3 Past Experiences (a chance to reflect);
p4-5 Laboratory Safety (this will be discussed in more detail in their first lesson);
p6-7 Research Sources (to find out how the best places to look up information);
p8-9 Problem Solving (complete at least one task we do not expect perfection,
but would like to see how students approach the tasks);
p10-12 Investigations (comprehension task, to learn how to present investigative
work and think about ways of improving the investigation).

In addition, we have included some practical activities to try if you have the opportunity.
These can be completed using basic household equipment and items that may be purchased
easily and at little cost.
p14-15 Full Investigations (try at least one experiment, recording the results on p16-
19);
p20-23 Observation-Based Experiments (try at least one experiment, noting any
observations and considering the extension questions).
While these tasks may require an extra pair of hands and perhaps a little guidance, we hope
that students will have the chance to try some simple tasks while appreciating that Science
applies to every aspect of the real world. Please note the safety implications of each
experiment, and ensure an adult is nearby (some of the experiments may require using hot
water, knives, or household chemicals).

The work is designed to offer challenge, and give an introduction to their Science experience at
Townley. We appreciate that some students may struggle with some areas, so simply ask that
students complete the work to the best of their ability; they are welcome to ask for help
from parents or research information they are unsure about we hope to encourage
independence and questioning skills to help students deepen their understanding.

The Science Department is currently in the process of developing resources to assist parents in
helping their daughters in Science, and hope that these will be available later in the summer
term. In the meantime, please feel free to contact us if you need further information on how you
can support your daughter.
