For my community service activity, I attended and participated in two St. Lukes IPEP
Clinics focusing on pulmonary and cardiac symptoms. The morning began with various
disciplines such as medical, nursing, pharmacy, dietician students, St. Luke staff, and doctors
from Banner UMC met in St. Lukes chapel to review the schedule for the day and discuss
symptoms, assessment tools, and questions for the focused body system of pulmonary and
cardiovascular. We were then placed into groups consisting of at least one medical student, one
nursing student, one pharmacy student, and one dietician student. We reviewed the packet of
assessment on. Each session we saw at least two elders and asked them questions regarding
symptoms and lifestyle choices affecting the focused organ system and took their vital signs.
Once the assessment was completed, a few volunteers would present the assessment findings to a
doctor, a St. Lukes staff member, and teacher of the listed medical professional schools. We all
collaborated and determined follow up information the elder should complete and explained to
Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?
This program was held at St Lukes Home in Tucson, AZ, which is an assisted-living
community for low-income elders. Each IPEP session lasted for four hours.
students in the medical professional should complete. You learn so much when collaborating
with all different disciplines of medical services such as medical, nursing, pharmacy, and
dietician students. It was also very helpful being able to present our assessment findings to
doctors; I thought it was a great practice for nurse handoffs or SBAR with doctors.
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why
is such a great learning experience. After completing my two sessions, I feel much more
confident working with various medical disciplines and doctors. IPEP is also very interesting. I
learned a lot more about objective and subjective assessments that I will use in the future with
my patients.
