Disclosure Math 2 (Honors)

Course Description
Mathematics is the single most powerful tool developed by humanity. It is used to analyze, manipulate,
validate, and predict all quantitative aspects of hypothetical questioning and the real world. The study of
math in school is the education and implementation of these tools in an abstract space, to practice mastering
these tools with no real physical consequence so that when students use this tool in their future jobs, they
are competent in its practice. Math is not an easy subject, it requires effort and a level of thinking not often
displayed by the general public. Math is a subject of detail, precision, reasoning, rationality, and memory
asking students to think about, describe, and quantify mechanics people often take for granted. It challenges
simplicity may ultimately be the reason so many are adverse to its study.

The class will be designed around eight (8) standards for mathematical practice. 1) make sense of prob-
lems and solve them, 2) reason abstractly and quantitatively, 3) construct viable arguments and critique
reasoning, 4) model with mathematics, 5) use appropriate tools strategically, 6) attend to precision, 7) look
for and make use of structure, and 8) look for and express regularity in repetition.

Course Goals
In the third term of Math 2 (honors), we will study
Geometric figures
Triangle similarity and right triangles

Circles from a geometric perspective

These are part of chapters five (5) through seven (7) of the Mathematics Vision Project (MVP) curriculum.

Course Materials
Textbook - We will primarily be using Secondary Two Mathematics: An Integrated Approach by the
Mathematics Vision Project.
Spiral Notebook and Pencil - Students will need a spiral notebook with at least 70 sheets of paper
and a pencil to write with. If you are not able to acquire these items, let me know.

Calculator - Calculators will see limited use during this term of study. Please realize that math is
ultimately not the study of calculator button mashing, it is making sense and making use of quantitative
mechanics and reasoning.

Format and Procedures

Class learning activities will include discussion, group and individual projects, cooperative learning jour-
nals, board work, presentations, videos, pop quizzes, and exams
1. Be ready! Bring all required class materials every day!

2. Place your attendence tracker and homework assignment on your desk.

3. Begin working on daily math problem and journal writing prompt.
4. Grade homework and review any incomplete/unclear problems.
5. Class learning activity - launch, explore, discuss in your groups!

6. Any assigned work/homework - finish any class work and get ahead on homework.
7. Clean the space around you, the classroom is not a sty or your garbage disposal.
8. Exit ticket (quiz, questions, or summary).

Classroom Rules
All actions in class should show respect to

1. Your peers and yourself

2. Your school
3. The subject you are learning
Uphold integrity - Do not cheat and give credit if you are using others content. Any student turning
in another students work as his or her own or gives his or her work to another for credit will receive zero
(0) credit for the assignment. In addition, any cheating on exams will result in an automatic 0
on the exam with no opportunity to recoup the score.
Attend Class and Participate - Learning math is not only easier if you are active and discussing
the subject with your peers and instructor, but it shows your instructor you are actively learning.
Class time is just that, time in class to learn the subject, not time to goof off or socialize about
irrelevant subjects.
Learn - Keep the right attitude, we all can learn. ASK A LOT OF RELEVANT QUESTIONS!
Everything new we learn is confusing and intimidating. It is important to obtain data so we can
alleviate these feelings and be confident in using this new content.
Follow West High School Student Handbook - No media devices allowed in class. I will not
confiscate them if they are not disruptive to the learning process, but I will confiscate them until the
end of class if they distract you or your peers from learning the class subject. Messages from families
need to go through the school office (801)578-8500. Follow the dress code. Offenses will result in
disciplinary action.

Grading Policy
Participation/Citizenship (10%) - As an educational institution, it is our duty not only to teach
a subject, but to train students to be active and productive members of society. As such, being
upstanding and respectful participants of the learning process will be integrated as 10% of each students
grade. I will notify parent(s)/guardian(s) when a students conduct repeatedly fails West
High Schools standards. Actions adverse to citizenship include being:
1. Disrespectful or abusive
2. Disruptive to learning (you causing others to not learn)
3. Off task (yourself not learning)
4. Tardy or Absent without viable excuse(s)
Assignments (30%) - Given with each class topic and learning activity. You will be given time in
class to begin assignments, practice your understanding, and ask questions. Deductions for incomplete
work are made depending on the length of the assignment. Assignments are checked/turned in at the
beginning of class.
Quizzes (10%) - Periodic assessment of what you have learned. Quizzes hold less weight than exams
because they will not test you on material more than a week old and may allow you to use resources
not typically allowed on an exam.

Projects and Exams (35%) - Periodic assessment on what you have learned over several subjects.
Exams will require intensive study and practice as you will be tested on large amounts of material with
very limited resources made available. The knowledge you pull from your brain will be your greatest
asset so be sure to pack it full before an upcoming exam!

Learning Activities (15%) - Active participation in in-class activities are crucial to the learning
process. Discussions with your peers, questioning your instructor, and ultimately understanding the
materials and demonstrating it will determine your learning activities grade.
I will notify parent(s)/guardian(s) if there are drastic negative changes in a students
grade or if a student is in danger of failing.

All work for the quarter will be presented in your folder/binder. Organize your work
into five sections
1. Math and Write
2. Notes and Observations
3. Class Activities
4. Assignments
5. Exams
