Linear Asset Management Basic Concepts
Discrete versus Linear Asset
Discrete Assets
Occupies a defined space and can be
tracked by its location
Modeled as part of a parent child
hierarchy
Work Performed on entire asset or child
components
Linear Assets
Linear assets are not specific to single
location
Have an associated length dimension
represented by means of start points and
end points and may have characteristics
which vary in segments
Multiple linear asset networks may
intersect with one another and have an
association with discrete assets as well as
other entities

5 | VIZIYA Corp.
Linear Asset Management Basic Concepts
Linear Referencing
Linear Referencing Method (LRM)
An LRM is associated with each Linear Asset
Establishes Reference Unit of Measure
associated with beginning and end measures for
both linear assets and / or segments (X

Z Measure
Measure)
Establishes Offset Units of Measure for offset
distances used for locating associated entities
related to the linear asset (X, Y, and Z Measures)
Linear Referencing
Linear referencing is used to locate points and Y Measure
spans along linear assets. Use linear referencing
to locate point assets, elements, attributes, and
assigned work.

Linear Asset Management Basic Concepts
Properties
Properties are the attributes of
linear assets that are tracked along
its length with reference of
measure values or for a point on
the linear asset. For example:
Diameter, Material, Wall Thickness
of a pipeline.
Speed Limit and Surface Condition
of the road.
Line Voltage of the transmission
line.
Fluid Pressure of the pipeline
Linear Asset Properties can be
searched or viewed on maps

7 | VIZIYA Corp.
Linear Asset Management Basic Concepts
Dynamic Segmentation
Dynamic Segmentation
Dynamic segmentation is the
process of clipping the asset
geometry for given measure
values without disturbing the
underlying asset geometry
The dynamic segmentation
process enables multiple sets of
properties to be associated with
any portion of a line feature
Work Orders can likewise be
associated with dynamic
segments by defining by
associating pertinent measure
values related to work Don Kiel

Linear Asset Management Basic Concepts
Elements and Reference Points
Element
Primarily non-asset components of a linear asset used to locate the start and end points of work
locations along a linear asset
Can be Point or Linear, Shared by multiple Assets, and Labelled (e.g. Mile Marker 24)
The elements are mostly non asset components of a linear asset not maintainable entities
Reference Points
Labelled Elements utilized to simplify communication of a work location, such as a culvert or
intersection
