Question & Answer
Was King Zhou really a tyrant?
The Chinese classic Creation of the Gods has vividly portrayed King Zhou as
a debauched and lecherous character with little regard for the lives of his people.
However, some have argued that the King Zhou in history was not as tyrannical
as what the novel has portrayed him.
King Zhou is outspoken with an alert mind, and excels in talent and
strength; he can easily put down ferocious beasts with his hands.
Zi Gong, the disciple of Confucius, has pointed out that the wrongdoings that
King Zhou committed were not as severe as what historical records have
portrayed. It was a case of putting the blame on the King for crimes that he
probably did not commit.
King Zhou would follow whatever she said, including constructing the magnificent
Deer Platform, and luxurious wine baths where he and his concubines would
frolic in pools of wine.
When King Wu of Zhou wiped out the Shang Dynasty, King Zhou set his palace
on fire, whilst the imperial concubine hanged herself not long after.

Question & Answer
Grand Duke Jiang is a key character in Creation of the Gods and there was
indeed such a person in history. According to Records of the Great Historian
(Shiji ), the ancestors of Grand Duke Jiang once helped Da Yu to curb the
floods at the Yellow River. As a recognition of their contribution, Grand Duke
Jiangs ancestors were bestowed the land of L. Hence, they adopted the
surname L (Jiang Tai Gong was also known as L Shang).
During Grand Duke Jiangs time, the status of his family clan had declined.
Duke Jiang was once involved in the business of beef butchery and an eating
house. His life had been full of ups and downs, and his career was established
only in his seventies, after he was talent-spotted by King Wen of Zhou.
Has Grand Duke Jiang ever written a book on the art of war?
It was said that Grand Duke Jiang wrote a book on the art of war entitled Six
Strategies for War (also known as Grand Duke Jiangs Art of War), but it
was also commonly believed that it was another persons work that was attributed
to him instead.

After Nezha was revived through the lotus flower, the young and impetuous boy
returned to avenge his fathers misdeed. Li Jing was not his match but was
fortunately assisted by the Taoist of Lighting Lanterns of Mount Lingjiu, who
trapped Nezha in a pagoda and set it on fire until the young lad had to beg for
forgiveness. The Taoist later gave this pagoda to Li Jing. Hence, Li Jing was
known as the Pagoda-bearing Heavenly King Li.
There was a historical figure by the name of Li Jing who was born towards the
end of the Sui Dynasty and the start of the Tang Dynasty. He was a remarkable
military strategist and was appointed as an official at the military department.
Nezha had two elder brothers. The first brother, named Jin Zha, was a disciple
of Manjusri Bodhisattva; the second brother, named Muzha, was a disciple of
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Both of them had helped King Wu to overthrow
the Shang Dynasty.

Question & Answer
There is a celestial eye on the forehead of Yang Jian and his companion is the
Celestial Dog. He is known to have the ability to create 72 transformations
(some said 73 transformations).
In the famous Chinese classical novel Journey to the West, Erlang Deity was
said to have helped the Jade Emperor capture the Monkey King who was
creating trouble at the celestial court. The Monkey King is also said to possess
the ability to create 72 transformations. The fight between the Erlang Deity and
the Monkey King is vividly portrayed in Journey to the West and has been
known to many.

Question & Answer
Lei Zhenzi is said to be the hundredth son of King Wen of Zhou (Ji Chang).
Did the King really have a hundred sons?
The saying King Wen having a hundred sons has been widely known in folklore
and is a theme commonly seen in folk art and craft. This saying may be
exaggerated but the Chinese believe it is a blessing to have an abundance of
offspring. The portrayal of King Wen having a hundred sons may not be taken
literally but it is an indication that he had many sons. According to some historical
records, King Wen had twenty-two sons (including those borne by his first wife
and his concubines).
Bo Yikao, the eldest son of King Wen, was unfortunately killed by King Zhou.
Ji Fa, his second son who was later known as King Wu of Zhou, accomplished
his fathers mission and established the Zhou Dynasty.
Ji Dan, the fourth son of King Wen, was the famous Duke Zhou (Zhou Gong)
who played an important role during the founding years of the Zhou Dynasty.
When King Wu of Zhou passed away, he became regent for his nephew, the
young King Cheng of Zhou.

Question & Answer
When Zhao Gongming passed away, Jiang Ziya bestowed on him the title Keeper
of the Dragon-Tiger Altar (Jin Long Ru Yi Zheng Yi Long Hu Xuan Tan Zhen
Jun ), in short, Xuan Tan Zhen Jun
.
Zhao was appointed to lead the Deity for Treasures (Zhao Bao Tian Zun
), Deity for Valuables (Na Zhen Tian Zun ), Envoy for
Wealth (Zhao Cai Shi Zhe ) and Official for Prosperity (Li Shi Xian
Guan ), who were in charge of bestowing blessings and fortune. Being
the leader of these four deities, Zhao Gongming became known as the Supreme
God of Wealth.
Bi Gan, another character from Creation of the Gods, is also regarded as the
God of Wealth. This may be associated with the righteousness of Bi Gan whose
heart was dug out by King Zhou. The Chinese believed that since Bi Gan does
not have a heart, he would be neither selfish (si xin ) nor biased (pian
xin ) when dealing with money matters.
There are no historical records of Grand Tutor Wen who is actually a fictional
character portrayed in novels. Although Grand Tutor Wen joined forces with
Jiang Ziya in battle, he was a senior statesman of the Shang Dynasty and had
pledged loyalty to it.
He once tried to persuade King Zhou and proposed the Ten Strategies which
included: Demolishing the Deer Platform as well as the punishment of burning
criminals alive; removing Daji the imperial concubine from the palace; destroying
the wine baths; and releasing the provisions in the imperial storehouses to assist
the needy. Unfortunately, King Zhou did not heed his advice.

Question & Answer
In the original version of Creation of the Gods, there was a character who often
opposed Jiang Ziya. His name is Shen Gongbao, the disciple of Jiang Ziya.
Once, when Jiang Ziya returned to Palace Yuxu, the Primeval Lord of Heaven
commissioned him at the investiture of the deities to go to Xiqi to set up an altar
to honour the gods.
On his way to Xiqi, Jiang Ziya met his disciple Shen Gongbao. Believed to be
jealous of his teacher, Shen Gongbao opposed him by supporting King Zhou of
the Shang Dynasty. Later on, Shen Gongbao even sent some highly-skilled masters
to oppose Jiang Ziya and obstructed King Wus plan to overthrow King Zhou.
When Jiang Ziya eventually became a deity, Shen Gongbao was given the official
title General Fen Shui of the Eastern Sea.

Question & Answer
The Battle of Muye was an important battle fought against King Zhou in an
attempt to overthrow the Shang Dynasty. The battle was fought at Muye (todays
province of Henan).
As the main soldiers of the Shang army were away on an expedition at Dong
Yi, King Zhou gathered a total of 700,000 slaves and prisoners to form an army.
Although this hastily-formed army outnumbered the Zhou army, they detested
King Zhou and were reluctant to sacrifice their lives for him.
When the Zhou army attacked, this army joined forces with them instead of
fighting them. Realising that the Shang Dynasty was doomed to end, King Zhou
set the palace on fire. The historical Battle of Muye was of course not assisted
by deities or immortals; instead, slaves and prisoners played an important role in
this event.
