A Primer on Historic DORIC ORDER

American Mouldings
The basic function of any building is to be a shelter from rain, sun and wind. As
William R. Ware states in The American Vignola, a good architect and builder may
also make it a noble and delightful object, independent of its uses, giving the
building good proportions and fine details, and employing beautiful materials.

Any serious study of architecture (the art of building) will draw you into the Five
Orders of Architecture Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite, where
you will find rules of proportion, beauty and order perfected by over 3,000 years of
experimentation and refinement. The ancient Greeks and Romans intuitively
looked to nature for these perfect orders of proportion and scale, and confirmed
that what is pleasing to mans eye reflects what God has already created in nature
and in the human form.

Each part of a classical building was derived from a structural function the most
basic of which was for the building to stand up and keep the weather out. In order
to fully appreciate and properly use mouldings, a builder must first understand the
historical functions of the structural elements of the building.

As shown in the drawing below, these functional elements of a classical building

are reflected in the traditional mouldings found in the exterior cornice detail and
the homes interior. The beauty of such mouldings is derived from their shapes,
combinations, and especially their sizes and harmonious proportion to each other
and the room itself.

1. Cyma - the gutter, which

collects water and keeps it away
from the building, and terminates
the compositon.
1. 2. Corona - the ends of the roof rafters,
which create a drip to keep gutter
2. 3. overflow from running down the wall.
4.
3. Bedmold - in its simplest form, the
plate that supports the rafters and
transfers the load to the framing below.
4. Frieze - the ceiling joists; in the formal
Doric Order, triglyphs represent the
5.
ends of these joists.
5. Architrave - the beam that spans
between the columns.
6. Columns - the element of support;
6. columns had to align with the beam
above or the structure would not
be sound.
Illustration from Get Your House Right
by Marianne Cusato

The period from 1890 to 1940 was known as the American Renaissance, during which Americans designed and
built classical architecture on an extraordinary scale. Leading historic mouldings expert, Brent Hull, describes this
period as the Golden Age of American millwork, and the most popular designs of moulding began to be
compiled into standard moulding catalogs. What began as a Universal Moulding Catalog evolved into the 8000
series numbering system. The standard moulding catalogs would change each decade or so based on design
changes and the popular styles of the day.

2
Unfortunately, in the decades after World War II, most moulding sizes
and architectural ornamentation were minimized due to the popularity
of the new International Style and modern mass production milling
practices. What was a thick, sharp 8016 bed mould in the Standard
Moulding Catalog, 1925 Edition (shown at left), is now the thinner
and watered down version on the right. See also the door moulding
comparison on the right side of page 5. As the mouldings during this
period lost their sharp edges and classical shapes, their beauty, use and
desirability diminished. Over the last decade, however, there has been a
re-discovery and re-emergence of traditional and classical architecture
and a revival of great mouldings.

Traditional Interior Millwork

Purpose. Function. Beauty.
The primary purposes of interior mouldings are to visually reinforce the structural supports, to introduce scale
and proportion to rooms, and to produce harmonious effects of light and shade. Done correctly, good mouldings
enable visitors to read and understand the room it just feels right and they can innately relate to the
welcoming space.

Every element of traditional interior millwork is derived from the classical Orders and the location of mouldings is
based on practical function. For example, casings cover the joint between door jambs and the drywall or plaster
walls, the crown transitions between the ceiling and wall, and the base and shoe between the wall and floor all
areas that have a tendency to crack and open up as the building settles and shifts over time.

The beauty and elegance of these cornice crown

entablature

mouldings are also found in their

original functions: the crown acts as frieze
an interior cornice and provides an taenia
elegant termination to the room. The picture
architrave
casing acts as an architrave and mould
highlights and distinguishes the doors
and windows.

The chair rail corresponds to the cap

of the pedestal in the classical Orders,
but also protects the paint and
column

wallpaper from chair backs (which

were traditionally pushed back against
the wall when not in use). The base
serves as the support for the pedestal
on which the column would rest and
must be proportional to convey such
strength and support. chair rail

3
Scale and Proportion.
Though the Orders of classical architecture are today most often referenced to columns, these Orders provide a system of order,
scale and proportion to buildings even when columns are not being used. The intricate proportions and relationships of height
and width and sizes of the various elements of the classical entablature and pedestal provide us with guidelines for the sizing and
massing of our interior mouldings. For proper proportioning that is pleasing to the eye, the height of the base and the size and
detail of the architrave and cornice are based primarily on the ceiling height, but also on the importance of the room.

Classical architect and author Marianne Cusato suggests the following guide:

Classical Shapes of Mouldings

The early American architect and builder, Asher Benjamin (1773-1845), numbered the regular mouldings at eight:
the Ovolo (or quarter round) and Cyma Reversa (or ogee), being strong at their extremities are fit for supports; the
Cyma Recta (a terminating wave moulding) and Cavetto (or cove) terminate in a point and are designed to cover
other members; the Torus (or half round) and Astragal (or bead), shaped like ropes, are intended to bind and
strengthen the parts on which they are employed; and the Fillet (a small plane surface) and Scotia (darkness, a
hollow) are to separate, contrast and emphasize the effect of the other mouldings and to give a graceful turn to
the profile.

If the mouldings are only composed of parts of a circle and straight lines they are called Roman. If a moulding is
made of part of an ellipse, parabola or hyperbole, it is considered Greek. Many of the Greek patterns were based
on the proportions God created in the nautilus shell.

The timeless and classical beauty of mouldings arises, according to Benjamin, from the play of shadows, reflected
light, relief and contrast from plane surfaces, and in the beautiful variety and graduated levels of light and shade.
This requires in such mouldings, lines of distinction, sharp edges, and thickness to provide deep curves and
accurate shapes (not simply abstract combinations as are so often seen in todays stock mouldings).

4
Keys to Beautiful & Interesting Mouldings:
1. Simple design, with flat fillets or astragals (beads) separating any curved profiles.
2. Sharp edges, for crisp sharp shadow lines to mark boundaries between profiles.
3. Deeply cut incisions in thicker mouldings to both define the profiles and create variations in tone
with reflected light and shadows.
4. Substantial in size and detail, but properly proportioned to room and other elements, to decorate
the home and draw attention to the structural form.

Moulding Elements to Avoid:

1. Compressing too many profiles into the moulding, either slurring them together or simply
creating ruled lines of identical tones.
2. Rounded or eased edges that dont clearly define the different profiles and minimize the
shadow effects.
3. Shallow cuts out of thin moulding that destroys sense of depth and detail.
4. Small, thin mouldings simply to hide joints and seams and blend in, rather than emphasizing
the doors, windows, floors and ceilings they surround.

Stock vs. Custom Mouldings

Standard mouldings readily available at your local lumberyard are now mass produced and typically
imported from high-speed planing mills in Chile or elsewhere. These recognizable profiles are often
manufactured with finger-jointed pieces or MDF, and are generally known as Stock or Commodity
mouldings. Although stock mouldings are generally less expensive than custom run profiles, a builder
should take considerable care in selecting these. We have included some of todays most popular stock
profiles in the back of this catalog (pages 39-44), but as you will note, they often contain some of the
above elements to be avoided.

Custom run mouldings are locally manufactured to exact specifications in job lot quantities. The
architect or builder has complete flexibility in the design of custom mouldings and they can be run out
of any desired wood species. Standard or previously used patterns are often referred to as custom runs if
needed in stain grade wood. With typical one to two week lead times, more planning is required for their
use. Although the material cost for custom mouldings is somewhat higher, when combined with the
installation and finishing costs (which usually remain the same for either), the overall budget impact is
more than offset by the dramatic visual and aesthetic improvement of custom mouldings over stock. See
the inside back cover for more details on custom mouldings.

When ordering moulding for half circle or a full circle, we need to know the inside radius (taking the
desired reveal into account). When ordering an eyebrow, we need the width and height or rise from the
spring-line. Elliptical curves generally require a template. For radius crown or base moulding, we need the
wall's radius and whether it is concave or convex.

E F

The two most common methods of laying out an ellipse in the field are shown above. The first is known as
the "string method" and the second makes use of an instrument called a trammel. Both methods utilize major
and minor axis measurements (based on opening width and rise above the spring line) for accurately laying
out what many like to refer to as a true ellipse. The art of manufacturing and installing elliptical moldings is
even more difficult than the geometry and layout may suggest. We utilize CAD, CNC, specialty moulders,
shapers and years of experience (including over 5,000 radius openings) to properly measure and produce
beautiful curves.
Flexible Mouldings
Many standard profiles of flexible mouldings (known as "flex mould") are available in stock for certain appli-
cations. However, for flexible radius casings, custom profiles and most crown applications the flex mould
must be manufactured to the precise radius specified by the architect or builder. Please allow 2 to 3 weeks
lead time for such custom work.

Flexible Mouldings offer several benefits:

Extremely easy to install as one piece
Big savings in labor and material costs verses wood
High quality detail in paint grade and stain (gel) grade

Embellished Hardwood Mouldings & Woodcarvings
by

In early American fine homes, craftsmen hand chiseled and carved very ornate, detailed
mouldings along with the simpler planed mouldings. Even today, these embellished
mouldings can be used to enhance and accentuate rooms that may require an extra touch
of sophistication and detail. White River offers a fresh, classical approach to your mould-
ing needs. Mon Reale represents the highest relief and greatest definition of solid hard-
wood moulding. A fine-grained overlay, contoured to traditional hardwood moulding,
creates a look of unsurpassed elegance.

Many of today's moulding styles have their

roots in Ancient Greece. Egg and Dart is an
ornamental enrichment of the ovolo moulding
and is found in both Ancient Greek and
Roman architecture. Acanthus leaf mouldings
started appearing in Athens around 450 BC.
Dentil and Running Coin mouldings are found
as early as 500 BC and were used throughout
the Renaissance.

The ceiling can make a statement about a room,

and a ceiling medallion can add visual appeal Corbels can be elaborately carved or classically
and a unique style to any room. These old world simplistic, either style makes a nice architectural accent.
elements are generously cast and highly sculptured.

7
Moulding Built Ups
There are times due to the scale or desired look of a room, one piece of moulding will not do the job. In these
situations, several pieces of moulding profiles can be combined to create a unique, one of kind look. For built-up
crowns, the upper piece should be a terminating moulding (crown or cove) and any corona (part that looks like
soffit) should have a supporting moulding (bed mould or ovolo) underneath. Most of the examples below are
built up crowns or cornice details appropriate for emphasizing rooms with higher ceilings (see chart on page 4 for
proper proportions). In addition, moulding are often built up for mantels, chair rails, base moulding (with cap
and shoes), and casings (with backbands and plinth blocks).

Davis-Hawn Custom Moulding

The following pages 9-37 of this catalog show a small sampling of the
custom moulding profiles available in Davis-Hawns knife collection.
In addition to these examples, Davis-Hawn can expertly match virtually
any desired profile in the specified hardwood species. Please refer to
the inside back cover of this catalog for more information on
Davis-Hawns custom moulding operation.

Picture Mouldings
Picture moulds evolved from the entablature in classical architecture. Over the years, picture mould-
ings protected plaster walls of a house by providing a place to hang pictures without damaging the
walls. Picture mouldings can help unify a room by giving the cornice detail a more complete,
finished look. Depending on the height of the ceiling, picture mould should be installed 4 - 8
inches below the crown and when painted the same color, provides a properly proportioned frieze.

It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters
rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.

Architectural Columns
Great care should be exercised in selecting columns and comparing specifications, as
many columns produced today are not architecturally correct. Architects and discrimi-
nating builders have chosen Turncraft for over 40 years because their artfully crafted
columns are manufactured to closely follow the recommendations of The American
Vignola, The Five Orders, by William R. Ware. from the proportions and shape of
the column shaft to the intricate designs of the capitals and bases.
Depending on the Order specified, columns are available in fluted and unfluted, and tapered and non-
tapered versions. Square architectural columns and pilasters to match the detail of round tapered columns
are offered. Craftsman style square columns and pedestals (tapered, paneled and fluted versions) are also
available in Poly-Classic.
Installation Tips: Architecturally correct columns are gently tapered for the top two-thirds of the
shaft (called entasis which adds grace to the column) and non-tapered for the bottom one-third.
For proper fit of the capital and placement of the astragal, any necessary trimming of the shaft
must be cut from the bottom. The shaft of the column should be aligned with the beam, or architrave.

Getting columns right requires a detailed understanding of the classical Orders and their historic applications.
For sizing, stacking, engaging and other questions regarding installation, use and care, please contact your
Davis-Hawn salesperson.

Porches, Balconies and Railings
The porch has been a popular and striking architectural
feature since the 18th century - creating comfortable
outdoor spaces and adding to the social fabric of a
community.

The architectural treatment of the home should be carried

out in the details of the porch. Porch floorings and railings
complement the columns (pg. 29), outdoor shutters (pg. 33)
and doors and windows of the inviting porch.
Porch Flooring.
All seasoned carpenters working on traditional porches
have replaced decayed floorboards. Due to the porch's
weather exposure, durability of materials and proper
maintenance are critical.
Davis-Hawn recommends the following products:
IPE - Premier porch and decking material- beautiful and
extremely durable. Dark brown to olive-brown, or allow to weather gray.

Garapa - Light yellow to golden brown, weathers to light silvery gray (un-sealed). Both Ipe and Garapa are dense hardwoods
with natural resistance to rot, decay, splinters, scratches and even fire. Available in 4/4 & 5/4 thicknesses, T&G or grooved
for hidden fasteners (recommended).
Southern Pine KDAT - the traditional 1x4 T&G porch material, but improved. "Kiln-Dried After Treatment" is
pressure-treated yellow pine (decay and insect resistant) re-dried to under 19% moisture content (M.C.) for less shrink,
warp and cup. Unlike normal treated wood, KDAT may be immediately stained or painted without peeling.

Vertical-grain Douglas Fir and deep-swamp Cypress were traditionally used for porch floors and remain excellent
restoration choices. For less maintenance, we recommend Azek T&G porch flooring, Trex and TimberTech -
composite materials available in various sizes and colors.

Best Practices for Installing Newells &

Wood Porch Flooring: Sawn Balusters
* Acclimate wood for 1-2 weeks for boards to reach equilibrium M.C. (approx. 12%)
* Store properly before install- dry, open air, shaded, on stringers
* Before installation, seal all six sides, including T&G, with oil-based primer
* Slope porch framing 1/4 per foot with grooves parallel with slope
* Cover soil under porch with moisture barrier and encourage airflow (vents or lattice)

Timber Shaping
Brackets, Corbels & Rafter Tails
For over a decade, Davis-Hawn has been cutting raw timbers and beams (as large as 12 x 24) into beauti-
fully crafted brackets, corbels and rafter tails for timbered cornices, porches, pergolas and arbors/trellises.

Utilizing two 36 bandsaws, a Falberg portable timber bandsaw (with 18 cutting capacity for end details
on long timbers), beam saws, spindle sanders and other sanding equipment, our craftsman can meet your
projects specifications with finely crafted detail. In addition, we have over 130 templates in our millshop,
including the following:

Species and Textures Available.

Western Red Cedar S4S (Smooth 4 Sides) or Rough Texture
Douglas Fir
All cut profiles are sanded smooth
Cypress
Pine Hand-hewn and distressed look available
Oak Air-Dried Green or Kiln-Dried (KD)
KD is preferred for trusses, delicate brackets or when the typical checking & splitting that naturally
occurs with green timbers must be minimized. Antique salvaged beams and timbers are also available
(by special order, but we keep a limited number of shorter antique beams in stock).

32
Exterior Shutters
A wonderful architectural detail often overlooked or misused on homes is the outside shutters. Done correctly,
they can be one of the homes chief charms. Davis-Hawn offers superior-grade shutters that can add the finishing
touch to your home. The cost of well-made shutters is insignificant to the value and attractiveness they add to even
the simplest of dwellings.

In addition to ornamentation, shutters were historically valued for protection and ventilation - often with paneled
shutters downstairs for security and louvered (called blinds) upstairs for air and shade. To properly adorn your
home, correct sizing for each window and hinged installation are essential (even if shutting is rare, theyll look best
if they appear to have this function).
When selecting Davis-Hawn shutters, please consider the following:
Size the shutters so each one covers half the window (see below)
Hand-selected Western Red Cedar, naturally decay-resistent
Mount to window casing, not bricks or siding
Authentic forged hardware & shutter dogs (Peters,Wright)
Center rail & Panel configuration 50/50, cottage
Rabbited and beaded stiles for overlap when closed
Tilt-rod for decoration or working louvers
Cut-out, routed or stenciled patterns for panels
Copper caps for shedding water
Primed or pre-finished & ready to install

For elegant, maintenance-free beauty and todays most advanced materials, Davis-Hawn
proudly offers Atlantic Premium Shutters. Crafted with marine-grade fiberglass stiles
and louvers, structural-grade PVC rails and composite wood panels, Atlantics Architec-
tural Collection offers a limited lifetime structural warranty and 15 year factory finish
warranty on its vibrant 40-color palette.

Moulding and Millwork Services

Davis-Hawns mill facility includes a high level of experience with all types of millwork
equipment and tools necessary for straight-line ripping, gang ripping, resawing, planing,
sanding, band-sawing, shaping and manufacturing of straight and radius hardwood mouldings.
Profile Knives.
We have an extensive in-house knife collection capable of producing over 1,300 different
standard and custom moulding profiles. All profiles illustrated in this catalog are from knives
in the Davis-Hawn knife inventory, and there is no knife charge when using these profiles. For
remodels or preservation projects where authenticity is demanded, we can match any sample
profile in the specified hardwood, up to 4 thick and 12 wide. When matching or creating
new custom mouldings, a CAD program and small CNC router produce precise templates for
grinding knives to the exact profile desired. Custom knife charges vary based on size of the
profile, number of required knives and quantity of moulding footage ordered.
Quality Assurance.
In the hands of our experienced craftsmen, our Weinig Rondomat 934 grinds the razor sharp
knives in the moulder heads. In the millshop, these heads are mounted and calibrated in our
5-head Weinig P23 moulder, our Mikron 645 or one of our two 4-head XL moulders (for
flooring, siding and ceiling patterns). With careful attention to quality control, we run our
moulders at slower infeed rates to maximize the knife cuts per inch. The result is quality
assurance for our discriminating high-end customers and extremely crisp, smooth mouldings,
meeting or exceeding the AWI Custom Grade standards.
Set-Up Charges.
Our experienced moulder operators are able to professionally set up and calibrate the Weinig
moulder heads in increments of 1/1000th of an inch, to ensure precise and consistent profile
duplication. The time required for moulder set-up and adjustments varies based on the
complexity of the profile, and set-up charges vary accordingly. There are no set-up charges on
orders of a moulding profile of more than 500 lineal feet. Be sure to order enough footage for
trim waste in the field, as additional small runs of the same profile will incur a set-up charge.
Species and Lengths of Custom Moulding.
Davis-Hawn mouldings are made from kiln-dried hardwood lumber. Our standard paint grade
material for mouldings is poplar, a fine grained wood that is very workable. Pattern stock
(siding and ceilings) is typically run from Southern Pine, knotty Ponderosa Pine, mixed or
vertical-grain Douglas Fir, or select or pecky Cypress, depending on the application and desired
look and finish. All custom moulding is sold as random lengths, but specified lengths are
available as stock permits. Available lengths vary based on the species of wood requested and
currently available production from the hardwood sawmills.
Lead Times for Custom Moulding.
There are a number of steps required to manufacture quality custom hardwood mouldings,
including CAD programming of the profile, cutting of the template, grinding necessary knives,
set-up of the moulder, sourcing raw material, ripping and sizing of moulding blanks, running of
the moulding, quality control inspection and trimming, and tallying and wrapping the finished
product for delivery. As such, the typical lead time for custom straight mouldings, from the
date our customer places the order with us, is 1 to 2 weeks. Radius mouldings are much more
difficult and may take a week or two longer. With every order, we will provide you with an
expected delivery date and Davis-Hawn strives very hard to meet your expectations.
