Clark County School Board Meeting 3/31/2016

It is very important to take a few minutes to say the Pledge of Allegiance and for thirty

minutes of silence. The beginning of the meeting to be honest with you was a little confusing

with all of the motions and numbers that they were given. I understood that they were revising

or updating certain motions that were already in place. Once it was explained what the

representative wanted to change, then it was voted on and you can see it on the voting screen if it

is Yes to pass or No to not accept or pass.

There were four students present to introduce the programs in their school. Adriana

Adams from Cheyenne High School explained how they have become a resolution to the

problems daily faced and not stand with the problems. She shared how the programs in her

school has helped her with her future endeavors. She spoke about children with disabilities,

language deficiencies and problems all students face day to day. Lorisa McNeil from Indian

Springs High School shared that flexibility in one of the things she has learned from her school

and community being that today, she had to substitute and attend the meeting on behalf of the

President of her school. She states that she has learned how to interact with many different

students from different races, cultures, religious beliefs and disabilities. She also spoke

regarding the programs they have in their school and the possible impacts on all of the students.

Aldo Lazaro from West Prep High School who is a senior shared that he has been there since

middle to high school. He shares that this has been a great thing for him since he has built many

different bonds that will last a long time. He stated that a dance they prepared had not many

attendees yet they tried it again by reaching out to more people that can support and it was a big

success. He shared all the wonderful events, fund raisers and programs they have and how they

focus on community and nonprofit organizations. He stated that to him, West Prep was not just a

school it is a place to make memories, it is where they learn and grow. Kathlyn Tossie and she

showed a lot of pride to be there for the fifth time. She had information pertaining to the March

16th meeting. She basically went over what was discussed, what the goals were made at that time

and what the outcome was.

After they spoke, Dr. Linda Young ; President District C responded how important it is

that all of the young students that spoke have a lot in common. They are able to interact with

other students that may have different needs, learning styles, language barriers, and ideas as

theirs. She tells them that this will take them to far places and it is something they need when

they go out and work or interact with the rest of society. Its not where you come from is where

you are going is her favorite quote and it coincides with all of them. She shared that many years

ago, West Prep was a middle school and now is a Middle and High school and how she admires

his statement about the community involvement. Lazaro from West Prep had a Cancer

Fundraiser and she admired him for that because it thought all students not only about Cancer but

how to care for others and the community.

In this course of Nevada Law, we will learn about students identities and how we have to

respect everyone for who they are without and judgement and it matches with what the students

shared here. The fact that we have children with so many different backgrounds is a learning

experience not only for the student but for us Educators as well. It is very important to

understand that children may not believe what you believe or understand what you understand.

The other issue is the language proficiency and how some children in your class will be limited

English proficient students and it is something you have to be aware of and something that you

have to accommodate. I read in an article a long time ago about a child who did not speak

English and was just left there on the side and the teacher did not bother to help but just had him

sit there in her class. I broke my heart because all students have the right to learn no matter

where they come from, what they believe in or what their disability may be.

The meeting here was about three plus hours long and I listened to part of it and I really

enjoyed it. It helps me see that other schools try to implement the same type of programs to get

students engaged and involved. The focus of other schools like the one I work in is to get the

community involved and to support students, parents and guardians. It is a great thing to be able

to attend these meetings and learn from them.
