TYPES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
 PHYSICAL ABUSE
Physical force with the potential
for causing death, disability,
injury, or harm. Physical violence
includes, but is not limited to,
scratching, pushing, shoving,
throwing, grabbing, biting,
choking, shaking, slapping,
punching, burning, use of a
weapon, and use of restraints or
ones body, size, or strength
against another person.
Consequences associated with
physical abuse are severe and far
reaching, resulting in death in
extreme cases.
EMOTIONAL ABUSE
Psychological or emotional abuse
involves trauma to the victim
caused by acts, threats of acts, or
coercive tactics. This can include,
but is not limited to, humiliating
the victim, controlling what the
victim can and cannot do,
withholding information,
deliberately doing something to
make the victim feel diminished or
embarrassed, isolating the victim
from friends and family,
threatening or terrorizing, and
denying access to basic resources.
SEXUAL ABUSE FINANCIAL ABUSE

to be injured during violent
episodes. It is important to
recognize that both partners can
be violent in this scenario.
INTIMATE TERRORISM
In situations where intimate
terrorism is present, the abuser
usually demonstrates power and
control in order to dominate the
partner. Intimate terrorism is
frequently characterized by a
physical or emotional domination
of the victim and often involves
social isolation, financial
dependence, and emotional
degradation and is characterized
by feelings of fear and
hopelessness.
INTIMIDATION
The abuser may initially use
controlling behaviors such as
jealousy, telling what clothes to
wear, how to style hair & makeup,
who to hang around with, where
to go, etc. They may call
constantly or insist on going with
you everywhere you go. They may
use intimidation, bullying and
threats to gain power over and
control of other persons behavior,
thoughts and actions. He or she
may act jealous, controlling or
possessive.
ISOLATION
Usually the isolation in domestic
abuse begins with the controller
inserting emotional wedges
between the victim and his or her
family and friends. At some point,
the victim finds it too difficult to
connect with friends and family
due to the abuser.
 USING CHILDREN
Children who are exposed to
battering become fearful and
anxious. They are always watching
and waiting for the next fight to
occur between their parents. They
are always aware about
themselves, their mother and
their brothers and sisters. They
feel powerless in this kind of
situations.
USING THREATS
Many times, partners or ex-
partners use threats to maintain
control. If they have ever used
physical or sexual violence the
threat can be very intimidating.
Some abusers threaten to destroy
property of his partner, especially
that which means a lot to her.
They may threaten to hurt or kill
the partner, pets, other family
members, the children or
themselves.
