4th Adolescent Literacy Summit Reflections 4

Other comments:
Ignite session was interesting
How can we give the Minister of Ed who destroyed the class-size caps in EY a
picture book? How is removing class-size cap helping with literacy? Does the
MRA support larger classes? Do they think this will help literacy? This makes
me feel very discouraged as an educator in the province.
More strategies for writing
Are there Cdn authors/ teachers we could hear from as keynote? Better wifi.
Maybe a box of names for book draws would be fairer. Story telling was
funny but I have other things I could be doing like more strategies.
Something to drink other than coffee/ water. Wifi working. A drum for
names/ giveaways
Continue with great keynotes
Get a table to sell books. Presenters to give a list. Discount registration to
those who have to travel and stay in hotels.
Loved the student panel
Was upset no book sponsor selling the books we learned about. I had a
school budget to spend.
Healthier break snacks/ nutrition breaks
Continue to have authors at the summit- hearing their stories increase my
passion for presenting the books to my students. Provide tissues
Love, love, love the student and author panels. Powerful. Pernille is correct-
the best teachers are out students.
Having the Minister read a toneless speech then leave was pointless a Q and
A would be better.
Good conference
Thank you for bringing Pernille. So gratifying. Many issues dear to my heard.
So many conversations I tried to have with staff over the years.
Engaging and inspirational speakers.
Very disappointed that the MRA would honour the Minister who had enough
time for us teachers to talk down to us, praise the man who refuses to honour
our collective agreements, then leave immediately following the speech.
Politics aside that invitation should come with a stipulation to stay for the
morning.
Books available on site.
More seminars would be great. Panels were okay but should be an evening
event like ignite was. The panels werent as useful to teachers.
Pernilel and John Schu spoke to me and inspired me to make classroom
changes.
I feel like the ball is rolling and is picking up momentum. I feel like I may
have been the only HS science teacher at the summit. Inspire more science,
math Ss, and other HS teachers to learn and be part of this movement.
Summit gave a lot of attention to get students to read. Summit gave little
attention to reading for learning and understanding which is no choice, its
hard, its problem solving. What is this bridge between reading for pleasure
and reading for understanding/ learning and how does it happen?
I really enjoyed the practical ideas for the classroom and booklists
Very inspiring. A great reminders of the possibilities and so many things I
used to do that I will start doing again.
LOVE the student panel. Im going to try this at our assembly.
A few people needed the alternate meal and were disappointed. A gluten free
lasagna couldve been provided. Thursdays meal was like a side dish.
Enjoyed the 2 days. Inspired and challenged by people who love what they
do.
I am unsure of the credibility of the top 3 American speakers and how it
relates to my colleagues and experience.. I was looking for strategies and
ideas- not to be schooled on the residential school experience by American
citizens. ..
John Schu was awesome. I wish we had the energy and inspiration he had.
The importance of teaching and books.
Thank you for your work
Thank you for the FN content in the whole summit.
Ensure that the books mentioned are available
Great summit. Have a MY focus in the ignite
Great 2 days. Enjoyed every minute. Lots of energy, excitement, inspiration
in the air. The little things made the difference such as sketch noting,
student involvement and so many giveaways.
Start with the student, not the curriculum/ programs. If we dont we have
nothing.
Great keynotes
Maybe a speaker on facilitating student conversations
More Cdn speakers please. Have books available after book talks.
How can these strategies be used in some of the other courses at the higher
level? Content areas. Workshops for content area courses
Enjoyed working with texts in the Comprehension session and the opening
keynote
Keep bringing in publishers
Day 1 useable strategies; Day 2 inspiring.
Thank you for the emotional impact of your keynote speakers
Literacy in French Immersion; Jeff Buriers- Academic Language; more subject
area teachers who infuse literacy across curriculum; more in response to TRC;
more authors with indigineous perspectives
When there isnt a slide show put a blank screen/ the flashing was very
distracting for me. Great Summit well organized.
Enjoyed the student panel
Im so inspired by all of the speakers. Fantastic 2 days. Inspired to do fun
things with my kids to encourage reading.
I appreciate what I learned of approach and methodology- however- why do
we not have more or some focus on literacy needs in the senior years.
Thank you for the awesome 2 days. I appreciate the amount of work the
organizers have done. Excellent keynotes, author panel, and the students
panel.
