2. A space probe
Meaning: a type of space craft that does not have a person inside
Example: Space probes can be sent to far distances for long periods of time to gather
information about different areas in space.
3. A lunar module
Meaning: a small craft used for travelling between the moon and the larger space craft
orbiting the moon.
Example: When the first men walked on the moon they came out of the lunar module. The
first man to walk on the moon said "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."
7. The cosmos
Meaning: the universe, especially when it is thought of as an ordered system Example:
Although the challenge of exploring and understanding thecosmos is exciting, it is also
very expensive
9. A test flight
Page 1
Meaning: a flight during which a space craft or part of its equipment is tested
Example: Test flights add to the huge costs of space exploration.
17. To be an inspiration to
Meaning: to make somebody excited about something, especially thinking of the future
Example: The images of the first men on the moon were an inspiration to
people, and made them more hopeful about the future.

18. Spacesuits and helmets
Meaning: the clothing worn by astronauts.
Example: Astronauts must find it difficult to carry out maintenance tasks during space
flights wearing uncomfortable spacesuits and helmets.

20. Weightless conditions
Meaning; having no weight or appearing to have no weight. As a result, astronauts appear
to float in space.
Example: Astronauts work in weightless conditions, which must make even routine tasks
very difficult.
25. A spin-off
Meaning: a useful result of an activity that was designed to produce something different
Explanation: Space programs have produced spin-offs that have revolutionized modern
life, such as satellite television and communications.
(16/04/2016) In the future, it seems it will bemore difficult to live on the Earth. Some people
think more money should be spent on researching other planets to live, such as Mars. To
what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
ANSWER
It is beyond question that our planet will soon become unable to support human life. While some
people argue that no more spending should allocated to research on Mars or other possible planets
on which to live,I believe that such expenditureis essential.
There are related and important reasons why our planet is facing an ecological crisis, which will
result in the extinction of most species, including humans. Firstly, the worldpopulation will soon
reach 10 billion, putting an enormous strain on the environment and acceleratinghabitat
destructionand pollution. Secondly, this growing population is depleting -and will eventually
exhaust - natural resources on our planet. Already, for example, areas in Africa and Asia lack water
and desertification is spreading. Finally, the public has remained apathetic while governments have
failed to take action on global warming and to fight climate change, processes which have now
become irreversible.
Governments must therefore pour money into space research urgently. It will take time and vast
resources to launch space rockets, space probes and space shuttlesand to fund manned test
flights. These are necessary technological steps in the quest for a new homeland capable of
sustaining human life. Such steps are, however, extremely costly as, for example, the international
space station can only be maintained through funding by many nations. While that new homeland is
unlikely to be Mars itself, the goal of the conquest of space should be to find new planets which
might support life and save the human species from extinction.
In conclusion, I would argue that mankind is destroying the basis of life on Earth, and
governmentsmust therefore spend every available dollar on research into finding alternative
habitable planets.
