Lesson Plan for Episode #3

(Deepening & Reinforcing Learning)

Hook/Bridge:
I will open with short clips of an interview with Walter Dean Myers,
author of Bad Boy.
http://www.readingrockets.org/books/interviews/myersw

Tool or Strategy or Activity: What tools, strategies and/or activity

will you be using to deepen the learning concepts?
To deepen the learning around making inferences and citing key
details of the text while summarizing without opinions, students will
read an excerpt from Walter Dean Myers Bad Boy. We will do a Cloze
Read Aloud in 3 parts, so that students can pause in between to take
notes on key events in the beginning, middle, and end of this excerpt.
We will continue to practice making inferences, this time using a
fictional text. To reinforce comprehension, students will act out scenes
from the story in tableau fashion (action poses, option for sound
effects).

Keep in Mind:
The 8 Cs of engagement. Which ones are you targeting?
The 8 Cs targeted in this portion of the lesson include curiosity,
cooperation, connections, challenge, creativity, and choice. Curiosity
is satisfied with video clips of Walter Dean Myers talking about
himself and his profession, giving students insight into the grown man
who started as a bad boy. Students will no doubt make connections
with some of the events and situations in the story Bad Boy as young
Walter finds himself in dangerous and troubling moments. Students
will get creative when they cooperate in groups to reenact scenes
from Bad Boy. Students have the choice of which scene to reenact,
and roles for group members. Students will be challenged to continue
practicing the skill of making inferences using graphic organizers for a
fiction vs. a non-fiction text.

Learning Styles. Which learning styles are you hitting?

(You dont have to hit every one during this episode. It
is important to be aware of the styles that are being hit
during this section.)
MASTERY: Students will answer comprehension questions about
explicit story elements and events.
UNDERSTANDING: The Beginning/Middle/End graphic organizer will
help to reinforce the important parts of the story. Reenacting scenes
also allows for deeper analysis of a scene.
INTERPERSONAL: Students will get to choose their groups for
reenacting a scene.
SELF-EXPRESSIVE: Students will physically reenact scenes creatively
with action poses and sound effects.

How will you differentiate for students with a reading

disability and students who are English Language
Learners?

Closing the Lesson: How will you wrap up the lesson?

Exit Ticket:
Reflect on Walters experiences in Bad Boy. Which event stood out to
you the most as a lesson in character development? Explain your
answer and relate it to the schools core values (respect,
responsibility, honesty, determination, self-control).

Materials: What materials do you need to have ready? Make sure

these are part of the lesson you turn in. If you are using a list of
words, or graphic organizer, or specific questions, exit card, etc,
make sure you include them for me to view.

Making Inferences
An inference is a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning. You combine
what you learn from the text with what you already know to make an
inference.
