NapoleontheFirst,withallhisdisdainformen,bowedtoonepowerthathewas
pleasedtoregardasgreaterthanhimself.Intheheartofanatheisticageherepliedto
thesmatteringtheoristsofhisday,"Yourargumentsgentlemen,areveryfine.But
who,"pointinguptotheeveningsky,"whomadeallthese?"Andeventhegodless
scienceofourtimes,whilerejectingthescripturalanswertothisquestion,still
confessesthatithasnoothertogive."Thephenomenaofmatterandforce,"says
Tyndall,"liewithinourintellectualrangeandasfarastheyreachwewill,atallhazard,
pushourinquiries.Butbehind,andabove,andaroundall,therealmysteryofthe
universeliesunsolved,andasfarasweareconcerned,isincapableofsolution."But
whyincapableofsolution?Whynotalreadysolved,sofarasweareconcerned,in
this"simple,unequivocal,exhaustive,majestic"alphaoftheBible"Inthebeginning
Godcreatedtheheavenandtheearth"?
